Fan hitting shroud

I have a problem with my fan blades hitting the shroud on the bottom. 69 XR7 convertible with 351W. New 24", three core copper radiator. new shroud, both adj. down as far as they will go, 7 blade original fan in good shape. Fan will not center in shroud vertically needs to go up about 1/2". Has an after market water pump. My question is, do different brands of water pumps have the shaft at different height?

We need the convertible guys to chime in, but can you slot the shroud mounting holes to allow it to move further south?

351W convertible should have different motor mounts. Do you have those or the regular ones?

My '70 has the big block radiator and clutch fan that some PO installed. When I swapped my FMX for the T-5 trans, I had to shim the transmission mount slightly to get the fan back in alignment. My problem was the opposite though, the fan was hitting the top of the shroud after the swap. None the less, you might check the motor and trans mounts to see if there’s any room to adjust things in order to lower the the tail shaft of the trans slightly.

I would check your motor/transmission mounts, if one is broken or misaligned, the fan will hit.

There are not any convertible radiator or mounts, nor convertible fan shroud, nor Ford convertible water pump. There is not a convertible transmission mount. Those original convertible engine mounts lowered the engine slightly, the fans still fit in their respective shrouds.

I have a friend that had gotten a repro water pump that hit his fan shroud on the bottom. His pulleys almost touched too.

Is there room to slot the holes on the radiator, to lower the fan shroud?

Actually there is a different motor mount for 351W or C convertibles. Anchor 2257 is the hardtop version. It can be modified to the correct Anchor 2256 (obsolete, no longer available) by Mustang Barn in PA.

The original correct motor mount for 1969 - 1970 Cougar Body style 76 is listed in the 1975 Final Edition MPC. I have an April 69 revision that doesn’t list it. Should be basic number 6038.

Hi Royce,

The full part number, is C7ZA-6038-F. I share because I ordered a set of NOS that actually went to a truck. :frowning:

I have the Anchor 2257 and they are really close to the originals. I could only get one in unmodified. I correct that the modification is the relocation of the holes as shown in this diagram? Thanks!

Your photo shows how to make frame mounts that are like '67 small block or 69 - 70 convertible. The isolators is the part I am talking about. The 67 version puts the engine lower. Apparently it is the same as 69 - 70 convertible?

Thanks for the quick reply! I’m going to apologize now, but I am not familiar with “isolators” I was told that motor mounts for a 67 or 68 289 might work…that Is how I ended up with most of a 289 in my garage. LOL The motor mounts that came with that engine do not fit…

Here is what cracked in half, it is almost identical to the anchor 2257. It has been a while since I replaced just one, but I believe the issue was just hole placement. The driver side went in fine, but i just couldn’t get the second one in. My technique isn’t great, I was on the floor, engine slightly jacked up for access.

Is the isolator part of the mount?

Thanks for your patience on this one.

I was inferring that there are not any convertible lower radiator mounts. :unamused:

The rubber part is the isolator.
