My last one broke during the changeover to the 408C. This is a clip on the firewall that attaches to one of the studs (like the head of a nail) in the middle of the firewall ('69 Cougar). The engine harness and perhaps the transmission reverse light/neutral safety switch harness run through/are supported by this clip.
The part that clips onto the stud is broken (on the right side of the clip in the pictures).
Anyone have a good one they would be willing to part with?
Here’s another picture of a resto underway with the clip in place:
From Chris Many who some of you might remember from MCnet.
From his blog (where the picture came from): “Just above the tranmission tunnel is a ‘J-shaped’ plastic clip. Its job is to hold the harness that goes to the transmission. This part is not reproduced and is very often missing.”
Not even close in that it doesn’t mount via a firewall “peg”.
AMK F-587 are the only repro thing that I have seen which do mount on the pegs. However, they are made of sh!t plastic and break. I have gone through a package already and if I recall correctly I have originals in the places that use them on my car.
WCCC ought to collect these (the part I am inquiring about, not the AMK F-587 - originals) from their '69 parts cars (I’m betting they’re '69 only) and offer them for sale, they’re currently not listed in their clips offerings.
Concours and picky folks like myself would be interested in them.
It’s a silly little thing really, but I have quested for lesser things. Especially since I had one, broke it (or it was cracked to begin with), put the second, good one I had on and it got broken (or was found to be) during the 408C swap.
It is interesting to me that most are missing, might be '69 only and (from what I can tell) they are not reproduced.
Employed a small black zip tee to the brake line last night in my “last official act” for the evening. I actually am not even using it right (perhaps), I use this retention for the engine harness, my transmission harness may not even reach this area but then again I made it from the connector on down for the TKO.
Yeah, that’s the one Andrew! Now, what about my free one for making the suggestion? The listing for these two clips was not there yesterday. I can only assume it was my suggestion to Don that landed them there today!?
Actually they were there but no pic and unfinished description so basically a worthless listing. Each day we try to list another 10 parts and the low hanging fruit gets address first followed by the squeaky wheel listings… Items like this are basically a public service as there is no money in them.
Fair enough Don. Glad to see a source (probably the only one!) for them, I’ll get one with my next order. Hard to justify the shipping cost to order one by itself.
Funny coincidence, I had inquired about these clips over on the Concours Mustang forum a while back ~ as all of my firewall clips are missing so my speedometer cable and backup light wiring harness were just flapping around and getting melted on the headers.
Then I contacted Scott (at WCCC) about them and he said he had some on the yard cars. I figured I’d end up down there eventually and pick them up. And then I saw your post and figured I’d better get down there soon to get some while they were still available! LOL!
Scott and I found a fair number of each of the various firewall clips (the strap-style, J-style, and the other one with the odd shape). Scott noted that they seemed to have been used interchangeably / no specific location for each type. I saw them on both the '69 and '70, but I’m not sure if Scott also found them on the older cars or not.
So tonight I got my “new” clips installed on thier pegs, and got the cables pinned in place where they are supposed to be! Yay!
I did find that the J-style fit the speedo cable well, and the odd shaped one fit the wiring harness just right ~ I don’t think they would have fit as well the other way around.
Here is a pic from Dead Nuts On, showing their '69 B2 mustang as an example:
Interesting Mike. Isabel and Bronx cat (both AT cars) had the “speedo” type clip on them in the “speedo location” DNO shows, even though the speedo cable does not run to the right side on FMX AT applications. So Scott’s observation seems to be correct.
P.S. Mike, where on DNO’s site did you find that picture (or info for that matter)? I always go there when I have such a question/research going but could not find anything (including again just now!).
These are the three clips found on random 1969-70 firewalls. No pattern, that I can tell. The plumbers tape style is the most common, followed by the large clip, the thin flat one is very uncommon. Andrew has pictures taken, but we are temporarily having server problems for our pictures.
I actually got the pic from the Concours Mustang forum, but it is water-marked DNO, and the poster had referenced it there. Not sure where on the DNO site it is hidden, sorry!
~ on a related note, I found one of the J-clips on my firewall between the vacuum tree and the brake booster.
Here are some interesting pics from that unmolested '70 eliminator showing some of the firewall clips on that car:
