First gen Mercury Cougar history chart poster

I finally got around to ordering one of these prints and I have to say they’re very good quality and arrived from the other side of the world well packed and with no damaged.
I’ve framed it and it’s going up somewhere in the house this weekend.

Thanks for your purchase, Stuart. Your feedback is much appreciated and glad you like it.

Regards,

Andrew.

PS. If anyone is interested, here is the link to the print in question:

Andrew, I see that you also have one just for the 69 models. What are the chances I could also get one just for the 68s?

Hi Scott, I only ever sold one 1969 print, it hasn’t really had any attention. So I won’t be able to put any more time on any more single model year prints at this time sorry.

Originally, with this thread, I thought there was going to be more updates and a final “come and get it” post, but there wasn’t. I guess the “out of sight, out of mind” syndrome kicked in… at least for me. When Stuart posted that he had received his poster, it re-ignited my interest. Hopefully it does the same for others here, even with the inconvenient shipping.
My better half has a 69 XR-7 convertible, so I was thinking I might get one for her. I have had a lot of Cougars in my life, but I am partial to the 68. Naturally I would love to add a cool 68 version to my collection. I would also do the first two generation version that you have also created.
It would be nice to figure out a way to get around the individual shipping cost issue through a bulk sale for distributing (WCCC, John’s Classic Cougar, or other Cougar parts retailer) so that it is more attractive to more people.
I guess maybe another thing that I will try is to see if we can get a larger order together with our local club, to be delivered to one location and then those that ordered can pick them up at a club function, get-together/meeting, etc.

I just ordered one and the total, including shipping, was $35. For that price, and it being such a unique poster, I really didn’t think the shipping cost was an issue.

fordnutz, I think I kind of ended up getting busy with my regular work outside of these prints and plus I had hoped for somewhere between 10 and 20 potential orders for the print so I could re-launch it and discount it for members here, but I think I counted only 8, and my experience tells me that around only half of people who say they want it actually end up buying, so I was probably looking at around half that number in reality. I ended up quietly finishing it off some time later in between work on other prints.

Thanks for saying you’d buy the 67-70 print and also a 1968 print, if I made one. Well, I realised that I’ve already done a lot of 1968 models:

1968 Cougar
1968 Cougar XR-7 428
1968 Cougar GT
1968 Cougar GT-E 427
1968 Cougar XR7-G
1968 Cougar GT 500
1968 Cougar Calypso Coupe

To create the 1969 model year print I had to deeply study the brochure and information about all engine and trims, special editions and rarities which were produced for that year in order to fill up 12 spots on the print. As it stands, I have 7 models ready for a 1968 print. What other models would you suggest, if you’d like to suggest a way to make this print? We can have the same model with different engine options of course, as I did with the Eliminators on the 69 one. A total of 12 or 16 cars would be ideal. I look forward to seeing what you might come up with!

One addition could be the Cougar 6.5 litre option. It could be ordered with either the X or S code 390 engine and had it’s own “6.5” badge on the fender.

Andrew, sorry for not getting back to you sooner. It’s been a bit of a busy week. I have a bunch of factory literature on the 68 Cougars, so I could scan stuff and send it to you, if you like. Just let me know what you would like.
There’s also a wealth of info on the Cougar Club of America site (www.cougarclub.org) describing the various models and features.
As Steve mentioned the 6.5 litre option could be called out individually (http://www.cougarclub.org/cougar-gt.htm).
The XR-7 model could also be called out on it’s own, mentioning that it could be ordered with any engine available except the 289 (only available in non XR-7 Cougars with a 2V carb) and 427 (unless also ordered with the GT-E package http://www.cougarclub.org/gt-e.htm).
The Dan Gurney Package (http://www.cougarclub.org/dan-gurney-special.htm), which was different from the XR7-G package (http://www.cougarclub.org/xr-7-g.htm).
The 428 CJ as a stand alone (http://www.cougarclub.org/1968-r-code.htm).
The two tone paint cars (painted roof instead of a vinyl application) (http://www.cougarclub.org/two-tone-cougars.htm).
There was also a different emission system for cars destined for Canada. As well as a more stringent version for California (called California Emission).
Beside the Cougar 500 and Cougar 500 GT (http://www.cougarclub.org/cougar500.htm), there were also other regionally promoted special Cougars like the Ski Pak Special in Colorado, the 68 Rocky Mountain Special (purple cars that were sold to an insurance company for employee use in Alberta, Canada), and probably others.

Just showed my wife this. Told her id like to have 1 for Christmas. LoL Look forward to having this to add to my cougar poster collection…

thanks for keeping it going…

Pat

fordnutz, thanks for your very helpful post. I have tried to make sense of it all and studied the brochure to understand what engine was available for which models and so on. Here is my proposed list of cars for a 1968 model year print. What do you think?

Cougar 289-2bbl (introduced midyear)
Cougar 302-2bbl
Cougar 302-4bbl
Cougar 390-4bbl 6.5 (skipping 2bbl, will be mentioned in text)
Cougar XR-7 302-2bbl
Cougar XR-7 302-4bbl in two-tone
Cougar XR-7 390-2bbl
Cougar XR-7 390-4bbl
Cougar GT 390-4bbl
Cougar GT-E 427-4bbl
Cougar XR7-G
Cougar 500 GT (skipping base 500)
Cougar Calypso Coupe
Cougar Dan Gurney Special
Ski Pak
Rocky Mountain Special

Various cars will have various options/wheels/paint colours.

Pat, thanks for saying you’ll suggest to your partner a print for Xmas. Appreciate it.

I think I would approach it slightly different, but using your list you would want to list the R code and the 428 GTE.

I thought the Ski Pac cats were 69 only?
FYI, Another special cat (69) was the “Golden Cougar” marketed by "Bob Foss’ Lincoln Mercury in Colorado Springs. They were basically Sports specials w/ 4 “Special Gold colors” & original Gold vinyl tops. A special Golden Cougar script was also included in this package. Found a bit of info on the Cougars & the Colorado Cats on microfiche of newspapers from 1968 &9

The printed notice of change to the 289 2V was dated Oct 67 (a couple of months into 68 vehicle production).
Al, the 68 R code and GT-E R code cars should be called out as well.
You’re right Bill. I was mentioning the Ski Pac as an example of regional special editions and should have said 69. I’m pretty sure there were no 68 Ski Pac specials.
To get back to your list… here’s an update of suggestions (I think you mentioned you wanted 16 cars for the poster?).

Cougar 302-2bbl (289-2bbl introduced November 1967)
Cougar 302-4bbl
Cougar 390-2bbl 6.5 (also available with 4bbl)
Cougar in two-tone (also available as XR-7 and with all engine options)
Cougar XR-7 302-2bbl (also available with 4bbl)
Cougar XR-7 390-2bbl 6.5 (also available with 4bbl)
Cougar GT 390-4bbl
Cougar XR-7 GT 390-4bbl
Cougar GT-E 427-4bbl
Cougar GT-E 428-4bbl CJ RA (introduced May 1968)
Cougar XR-7 GT-E (427 and 428 CJ)
Cougar Dan Gurney Special (also available in XR-7)
Cougar XR7-G (302, 390, 428)
Cougar 500 GT (skipping base 500)
Cougar Calypso Coupe
Cougar Rocky Mountain Special

I just ordered my 67-70 edition of the poster but if this is the line-up for an all-68 poster I’ll be getting one of these as well. This is a great setup!

Hi everyone! I haven’t forgotten about making an all-68 Cougar print, it’s just been so busy for me with a lot of print orders in the lead-up to Xmas!

I was going to send you a PM to ask for an update, but I too was busy. I still plan to buy one of each (67-70, 68, and a 69) when they are done. I’m moving in a couple of months, so I wouldn’t be able to frame and hang it until after the move anyway.

Two more 70 XR7 corrections
The C pillar badge is missing
The side pin striping is too bold probably the Eliminator striping.

It’s an interesting item but having a 70 XR7 I would expect it to be depicted correctly

I’m sorry- where is the information to place an order? Just in a PM, or is there another way?
