Fitting 70 glass to 69 winders

I’m about to replace the glass in my 69 convertible with 70 glass, using the 69 manual winder mechanisms.

Looking for tips or details about any issues I might have with that combination

Thanks

I, for one, will be a highly interested observer…

To glue in glass, or not to glue in glass… that is the question!

You will have to change the ‘winder’ mechanism ( window regulator ) as well. 1970 ( bolt-in / holes drilled into the glass ) style will only work with the 1970 mechanisms, just as the 1969 ( glue-in style ) glass will only work with the 1969 regulators. The main difference ( but by no means the only one ) is the offset stamped into the end of the long arm that rolls in the horizontal guide at the front the glass.
This video from WCCC ( where else ? ) explains and shows the differences better than any:

Reading the viewers comments on the video provides a LOT of extra hints and context to the repairs and conversion. I did convert the glass on my 1969 XR-7, but long before the WCCC video was made - I encountered only one ( THE main ) problem - the use of the original 1969 regulator arm with the new 1970 glass caused a binding issue - which I solved by using a bench press to flatten-out the ‘offset’ at the end of the '69 regulator arm - no issues after that, and I didn’t have to replace them with 1970 regulators ( just as well, as my Cougar has power windows, as well. ) Best of luck with your decision / conversion.

I changed my 1969 XR 7 to 1970 glass without changing the regulators over 30 years ago. No issues.

Agree, no issues with using 69 regulator and 70 glass. Just a lot of patience.

Rear quarter windows are glued-in, both 1969 and 1970.
Just,1970 door glass is bolt in, at least 11 months worth had bolted in glass. There is a brief period at the beginning of the 1970 production where they used ‘1970’ glue in glass. Difficult to find, since it is not the same as 1969 door glass.

Also remember, when swapping to bolt-in door glass, all four windows must be replaced due to the shape of glass and location of the seal between the door and quarter glass.

Leon has all 4 pieces of glass (tinted) from a 1970 xr7 vert i parted out 20 years ago as i am the one that sold him all of it. The rear regulators should work from your 69 but i am not sure on door ones.

Hi Pat.

Yes that is what I am finally getting around to installing. Been sitting on the shelf for 20 years.

Glass is fine. Decided to stay with manual winders rather than the electrics that have been sitting on the same shelf. Maintenance on manual winders is easier and significantly reduce points of failure that gave me heartache on the 70 convertible. No old gears, switches and wiring to fail.

I remember that Bruce Habel had some tips from TCCN in 1990’s that made installation of 70 glass easier with 69 mechanisms. Just can’t find a copy anywhere

Hi Leon,

Check DMs, I sent a link to Bruce’s tips.

Hi Pat

Unfortunately the link to the TCCN article doesn’t work. The MCN post has the same info as Don’s 69 glass video

Job done. Biggest problem was getting the 70 brackets into 69 doors. Takes a bit of juggling and some extra force. Still have to finalise adjustments including one quarter vent that is way off.

Stuck with the manual winders and removed the central lock, alarm and some other failing electronics while I was at it. Installed new locks and door handles that, like the glass, have been sitting on the shelf for 20+ years
