I need to replace my speedometer cable in my 69 with a FMX. WCCC shows the cable with the emoji. I believe that is the Daniel Carpenter model. Are there any other options? Will the Daniel Carpenter version work at all?
All I know about the cable is, the inter core needs to be 63 inch long to have the right amount of slack but not to much. NPD makes a good one.
This is the sort of part that is normally in stock at a local auto part store. I don’t understand why you would want to wait for a delivery? Speedometer cables normally come dry in the box. They must be lubricated prior to use.
Often a previous owner/mechanic ran the cable too close to the exhaust. Is the cable housing melted? That may cause a bind near the melt. If the housing is OK you may be able to replace just the core. If you also need the housing, your local auto parts store should be able to get it next day if you’re in a metro area.
The housing is melted. The only speedometer cable I am finding is the Daniel Carpenter model which got a poor review at WCCC. I am assuming that Napa or Oreilly are supplying the same model. I think it is the only one available other that a used original. Or, am I just over thinking this?
The cable currently in the car is a replacement. The original when I got the car was severed at the transmission.
Have you thought about looking for a good used one? You can try Don Rush again, try Johns classic cougars or hit up Ken Gucker in Connecticut. Mercurycat21@hotmail.com He has alot of 69/70 parts. Or try John Benoit here.
thanks

I looked at WCCC but none in stock. Just starting to work on this. The speedo cable popped out of the retaining clip when working on the gauge cluster and melted against the exhaust.
I melted mine too; it came loose when doing cluster work.
I got one at autosomething store and lubed the heck out of it as Royce recommended. 8k miles later all good.
That looks like the direction I will go.
