found a 69 r-code standard cougar

i found a 69 cougar 428cj automatic. its been sitting in the same spot since 1985 its green with black vinal top, standard interior. hubcaps has the ram air set up missing s-tube but the rest is there. Body looks rusty its been outside all this time. any idea what its worth. i know what the guy is asking and im trying to figure out if its too much. any thoughts?

I’ve been offered $9000 recently for my 69 Q code auto all original with minimal rust issues and it has sat since 1992, not outside most of the time. Its a green green XR7 and has it breather set up but not ram air of course. Also the engine was verified good at Keith Crafts shop. I paid $10100 for it. I paid 16000 for a very early and very rusty 69 XR7 R Code 4 speed Yellow with black top that was pretty much untouched except the breather was missing, I am restoring it now. I’m sure I paid too much for each of them but won’t let the Q code car go for $9000. I am planning on restoring it now.

There are a lot of nice parts on it if it were too rusty to restore I would think, depending on rust issues 5 to 7 thousand in my book but I’m no expert.

Chris

i know what most of the parts are worth except for the ram air set up. (ive never owned one). this one would be a good donor car for a r code cougar missing its drivetrain i just dont see them up for sale as often as i used to.

Complete used and crusty, I could see $1500 as long as its in decent shape and that may be a little low. The tops and bottoms go for 600 each if they are decent. Some vendors go as high as 1000 each for a good top or bottom. I have an extra good top with the flapper if you end up needing one.

If you get it and are going to part it out I would be interested in the engine. A Q code standard 428CJ restored would be on the low end of the 428CJ market. If it’s rusted beyond spending the money to restore I would value it around $3,000 to $4,000 depending on the condition of the drivetrain maybe a bit more.

Bosselim69 --i would love to buy it for 3 to 4000 but he wants a bit more than that. with the nodular rear being worth around a grand. the ram air unit being worth around 1500 or up. Snorkle and breather are worth almost 1000.00 thats 3 to 4 thousand and we still have motor, trans, carb, manifolds etc. here are some pictures

If the engine and trans numbers match the car, its worth saving. You need to get under it to see how bad all that rust is going to be. Sitting in the dirt that long I’d bet you will have a lot of metal to replace. I would check if the motor turns over with the key or by hand , but first put some trans fluid in each spark plug hole ( 1 or 2 oz. ) and let soak for a day or two first. For what I can see in the pictures , easily $6500 ; from there it goes up with just how good the car is. If I were you and had the cash , I would get it on a trailer and get it home.

Didn’t know what climate it was in, but I see it is in FL. Shouldn’t have to worry about the engine block being frozen and broke. Hard to tell from the pictures but, it looks like the vinyl top really did in the roof. Is that rust at the B pillar or a piece of leftover vinyl top?
I guess for pricing I would go by what Chris has stated. their was a red 69 Cougar 428CJ rust free project on ebay a few months ago, but I couldn’t find the ad. Maybe someone else has the details. I think it sold around $15,000

I think you’re referring to the one discussed in this thread: 69 R code and Q code Projects on Craigslist - Portland, OR - Classic Cougars for Sale - Classic Cougar Community Forum

According to Don Rush, it appeared to be sold at $13K. The ad states it was missing parts, but it did at least include the block and heads. As an aside, this car was for sale ten or so years ago on the other site for $7,500 sans transmission, crank, air cleaner, and other misc. stuff.

Both of these cars will be gorgeous restored. Hope you’re able to get ahold of it and the rust isn’t too bad.

Well i did get the car and had it delivered to my shop friday. played around with it some saturday and actually fired the motor up after 29 years sitting. it runs but needs some carb work. i think Monday ill put a known good carb on it. lifter are ticking a little but thats probably to be expected. Rust is typical for North Florida, It will need floors and drivers side torque box, lower quarters, trunk drops. funny thing is its a vynal top car and the top is long gone but the steel roof is in great shape.

That is really cool! Congrats on the find. :sunglasses:

Very nice! I’m glad you got the car! Can’t wait to see some more pictures of it. I looks real good from what I can see.

Congrats on the purchase! Some guys have all the luck… Looking forward to following the resto process.
