Found a rattle in my '69 need some help

I found a rattle in the right side of the dash of my recently acquired '69 standard. I found a strut rod that is barely attached to the cowl but the bottom was not attached to anything. Where should this rod be mounted? Anybody have a picture of the dash with the pad off?

Also I found a flasher can hanging loose in the same area. Is there a clip that be mounted in?

Ed,

There are a few brackets under the dash. Can you be more specific and/or post a picture? I’m sure I have pictures of what you are looking for in my ECI thread but if I know what in particular you need info on I can point you to the right place.

I have some difficulties seeing the rod since the car is completely assembled. The support that is rattling is a 10" ish long rod/tube with flat ends (they may be bent from the line through the primary rod, I don’t remember) currently loosely connected with a potentially cross threaded bolt to a small factory spot welded on bracket with what looks like some sort of captured nut on the cowl just to right of the center section fairly close to the top. It hangs down to roughtly the lower edge fo the dash. I thought it might connect to the lower edge of the dash where the section that includes the glove box door connects to the center piece. Does this make any sense to you?

Yep, sure does, sorry to say it doesn’t appear that I have a good picture of what you need. But, I can look at where the dash end attaches when I get home form work. You are correct about the captured nut in a bracket on the lower cowl (and obviously that should be tight). The dash end I believe has it’s own bolt up through the bottom ofthe lower dash, it is near the bolt or bolts on the left side of the glove box door hinge attaching bolts.

This?

Here’s the bottom of the bracket looking down into the dash.

Bottom of the dash left of the glovebox. The large bolt in the center is for the bracket, the other two hold the glovebox on.

That’s it! Thanks! I’m missing the bolt in the center and I suspect the top one isn’t threaded correctly. I’d prefer to make the fix without taking the dash pad off the car so I might just pull the passenger seat out. How does the glove box come out?

Its all just attached to the bottom of the dash - those two bolts on the left and another two or three on the right side. There’s also a chain in the right side of the glove box that you’ll need to remove.

Wow! An intact cowl blanket! i have never seen one of those before, just messy remnants!

Also, good job on the assist to Ed, will save me the trouble when I get home!

If the top bolt is cross threaded and the bottom bolt is missing, that most likely indicates that someone who doesn’t like to reassemble things properly did the reassembly on that dash for some reason.

I’d take it apart and look around for cobbled together fixes. People generally don’t take dashboards apart for fun. My 2 cents.
