Found R-Code 1968 Cougar Today

I was hoping someone may have had a photo of any Cougar he was driving like the photo of Dan Gurney above.

Continue searching for the diamond in the ruff…its an honor and pleasure to own any 68 CJ Car either a GTE or Non GTE.

I agree!! I just know this car has a story to tell. I want to know what that story is.

You had mentioned bruce Fitzgibbons, I noticed in 1 of the pictures from the ford racing team of Canada he raced the 70 cougar for them at that time. To bad someone here doesn’t know him…

thanks
pat

This particular car was in the town of Canada, Kentucky. It’s not documented to have ever been to the country of Canada. Two different things…

Here is a vintage pic (circa 1967) of Bud Moore Engineering in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Looks like a couple of people drove Cougars to the shop that day.

Going on 25 days waiting for my personalized marti-Report. The website says 10-14 days. I’m hoping that the delay is because they are finding interesting info.

What are you seeking to learn from the Marti Report? How will the Marti report factor into where you determine the value to be?

Have you been able to speak with Bill Quay or Phil Parcells about what they know about your cars history?

Have you considered a quote to have the car restored to either weigh the value verses work needed or to possibly keep and enjoy after it is back to its previous glory?

Glad to see you post as there are a lot of people hopeful to see your car restored and back on the road.

There was the open end question about the number of 4:30 traction lok cars built, any information about the first possible owner, if the car was sold out of Spitzer Ford or traded or shipped to another dealer or anything else interesting about the car that he may know of. I have restored several cars over my lifetime including a 67 GT500 tribute but never a concours car to exacting standards. I tend to take a few liberties that concours folks would frown upon. Here is the clone I built about 10 years ago.

1967 date coded 427 side oiler with 69 Cobra Jet heads, Lemans rods, solid lifters, Factory dual quad set up, Rug S toploader, did my own staggered shock conversion, 4wheel disc brakes, 9" 3:50 Traction Loc, Custom built full frame, widened functional side scoops, custom made shock tower brace, rear mounted battery, 1968 headrest seats and I even put factory A/C on it. Had Dan Williams build the trans and the engine was built by Rick Toombs former engine builder with Homan and Moody, but I did everything else literally by myself including body, paint, interior and all mechanical and assembly. Took me three years, I don’t know if I can do another at 60. I can still get under the car, but getting back up isn’t as easy as it used to be.

Fast Eddie Schartman was given a 69 XR-7 CJ loaded by Mercury. It was sold by the family a few years ago.

Well it is official. This the ONLY 1968 Cougar 428 Cobra Jet 4spd Cobra Jet that came with the ultra high 4:30 traction lok drag racing rear axle ratio.

Or is it? Seems to me the report can be interpreted in dozens of ways and really doesn’t say much at all. No info on how many 4:30 cards were built or how many were 4spds or autos or anything more useful than my car was one of 11 red 4spd CJ cars in the standard body. I’m feeling kind of ripped of.

That’s not how you interpret that.

The Marti breakdown is filtering down by option. A more accurate way to read it is that your Cougar is the only 1968 Cougar hardtop R-code, 4-speed that was painted Cardinal Red and with the Black Décor bucket seats that also has the 4.30 Traction-Loc Rear Axle. It’s the full listed combination that makes it a 1 of 1.

I was hoping for a less cheesy break down. One that actually has substance. I wanted to know how many 4:30 1968 cougars with the 428 were made and how many were 4spd vs auto. I let them KNOW this when I ordered the report. I don’t care if it is a one of one because it has an AM radio. It seems that when you do get down to the nitty gritty on a rare Ford, these reports should not break anything down to the color of the seats.

Kevin has been known to conduct research on specific questions (like the one you articulated above) on request. Blasting the guy on a public forum, saying that you feel “ripped off” when you paid for information & received said information, doesn’t seem like the right approach.

Have fun w/that.

I think in order to get the breakdown of 1968 Standard R Codes with 3.50/3.91/4.30 and then how many were produced with auto vs manual with each axle code, you would have to order ‘Research Stats’ (https://www.martiauto.com/secure/stats.cfm?action=551). However, Kevin doesn’t seem to be accepting requests at the moment.

I personally think the 1 of 48 produced with R code 4 speed is the selling point. Let the buyer speculate on how many had 4.30’s. I’d imagine 4.30 TL would be the lowest production of the axles.

For reference, 469 Boss 302 Eliminators were built in 1970. Only 58 of them had a W code 4.30 rear end. The #'s for '69 SCJ Eliminators are still unknown AFAIK, but it’s speculated to be in the high 60’s.

You may be better off contacting the 68 R code Registrar (Mr Quay?) and requesting information for how many R code 4.30 std’s he has in his data. That way you know how many any documented

Normally, I would agree. However, there were a total of 19 emails back and forth between myself and the Marti-report company and it was VERY clear what I was attempting to document. I paid for the information I requested and did NOT get it. If the report they were selling me would not have provided that information, then they should have said so and not taken my money and gave me something that was worthless for my stated purpose. I wanted to document how many 4:30 CJ cars there were. How many were 4spds. They HAVE the information I was looking for, but instead chose to provide me with something else. My desired information could have been provided by changing the order that they filter the records. Drivetrain first, trans second, axle third, color fourth and interior fifth. NOT color, interior and then axle. They treated a rare axle combo like wheel opening molding or deluxe seat belts.

Looks like you got 2/3 of what you asked for (engine then transmission). Maybe you could get back in touch, articulate the request to move the 4.30 gears up ahead of the red paint and black buckets? Seems easy enough if they already have those stats. I hope you can get a report that meets your needs.

Not really, because the number of engine (428) and trans (4spd) cars is already known. The only real thing this report tells me is that there were eleven of the 48 made in red. But that was NOT what I was asking to know. None of my communications ask for any info on colors. My communications were clear I wanted to document the axle ratio rarity. This report is worthless for that purpose. by filtering the axle LAST, they made the report worthless.

With the purchase price of the car you can afford to play nice. You’ve already won. Mr. Marti is a good guy. Assume good will and try again.
