Hey all, I was wonder if anybody would know if I could take a 1976 cougar frame and put a 1968 cougar body on it with little work? I know that the 76 are 1inch longer wheelbase then 68. If anybody could help me or give me any input.
The 1968 Cougar is made with unibody construction not a seperate frame.

Ok I think I have found someone that has crazier ideas than me.
I put a 92 T-Bird cradle/suspension and strut towers (narrowed 4 inches) and welded in rear floor from 98 mustang for stock 4 link rear axle (narrowed 3 1/8 inch) new 1 piece floorboard from 98 t-bird on my 64 ranchero. yeah I am insane.
first thing you said 1" longer wheelbase, the width I would bet is 3 to 4 inches wider.
next frame height, if floorboard sat on frame this would raise body 6 -8 inches
unless you raised floorboard frame would be visible.
lastly suspension of 76 was nothing special it does not even use a rack and pinion
But a frame is available if you wish to spend the money:

XJ6 front and rear plus subframe connectors. Just about the same track and wheelbase
Fastcat, is that you buddy??
On a side note, you can sure rack up a big bill on that GMachine frame in a hurry. Might be a fun project, if I won the powerball.
If anybody could help me or give me any input.
There has to be a more productive use of your time and money.
Guessing from your user name, you have two Cougars that you want to use to make one good one. Sounds like you have a '68 that is worn out mechanically and a '76 that has a good drive line / suspension.
If that is the case, the first problem ins that the '76 is body on frame construction and the '68 is unibody. So no easy transplant will work. On the other hand you might be able to use the engine and transmission from the '76 in the 68. The most common engine was the 351 which I believe was a Windsor in '76 although the Cleveland would also work. The 400 and the 460 were also available. The 460 in-particular can be an interesting swap although it is a very tight fir in the '68. The transmission was the C6 automatic, but you will need to check the shift arm as I believe it is upside down relative the what you need for the '68 floor shift. The engines were really off on power by '76 so if you are starting with a stock engine then you might want to do a few things to get it back up to decent power.
Most likely 351 in a 76 is a 351M, which had the taller/wider 400 block.
It may have been the M version. It would be a good idea to verify exactly what it is…
Thanks for the input and help guys, so as it’s I have a 1967 Cougar no options just parts trim and the interior. Also a 1969 Cougar 390 engine with a stick. The cars have been sitting for 10 years inside so suspension is gone and little rusty on the underside, frame rails look a little gone but got to investigate. Possibly was going to buy a 76 but as it looks not going to work. What years would I look for a xj6?
The FE 390 '69 stick car sounds very cool! I would not discount the unibodies on either car as not viable, you should see the mess I started with! Can you post some pictures of the undercarriage and rough areas there and otherwise? I am sure there are many people here (including myself) that would be happy to advise you.
Regards,
Robert
Gold 390 is very cool (3 or 4 speed?). Love the dog dish hubcaps.
Here is a picture of the rotten front subframe. The rear doesn’t seem to be so bad. Is there any website that has fair prices?
Take a look at the Dynacorn one piece frame rail and shock tower assy, used them on my Mustang and they are hi quality pieces.
Ouch!
$omewhere recently I ran acro$$ a full frame made for Cougar’$, anyone $ee thi$ a$ well?
Yeah, post #4 of this thread…not for the faint of heart, though…or the light of wallet.
Schwartz Performance has a full chassis for it.
