1968 XR7. The old fuel tank was trash so I replaced it with a new Dorman 576-036. Now the fuel filler pipe will not line up. It’s offset about 1/2 inch front to rear. Centerline is fine. The old tank was marked “F28A” (Made in Canada) and from what I can tell, the old tank was correct.
Ideas?
I might be wrong here, but it looks to me like you have the wrong filler neck. There should be about an inch gap between the filler neck and the bib on the tank. They almost never line up perfectly. But usually, better than that. By the looks of it even if you had an inch gap it wouldn’t line up well enough to get the rubber filler hose in place.
The Dorman tank is likely no good. It appears to be powder coated which is a bad sign. Quality repops have the drain and are galvanized like originals.
Have to agree with Royce. I just installed a new tank I bought from WCCC and it lined up perfectly. It was galvanized, not powder coated
Thanks all. I just order the 14629 premium reproduction from WCCC yesterday. WCCC is wonderful but shipping cross country (I’m in Virginia) comes at a premium. $81.50 for just the tank.
I snagged an online pic of a filler tube, blew it up to size and printed it out. The pic and the tube that I have match so it would seem that the tube is correct.
I’ve also not had a problem with Dorman before. I did a Dorman tank on a '91 Toyota Pickup years ago and it was perfect. I’m going to pull this Dorman and send it back.
