Garage lighting

I’m going to be upgrading the lighting in my garage with LED fluorescent style lights.

Just curious what others have done and pics if possible.

Also has anyone added lighting to the over head door?

Thanks

Ed

I just bought this pack:

I only put up two so far:

Yes, I know my garage is a mess but there’s room for my delivery this week.

Mine is 30 X 50. I used 24 fixtures, each holds 4 each 48" LED lamps.

Those are some impressive cat towers you have.

Royce has the right idea. I started with 12 fluorescent fixtures and added a couple more. It’s not enough light. LED wasn’t really affordable back then. I need to bite the bullet and change them all out.

My shop is about 1300 sq ft and I also used 24 4’ LED fixtures that I bought from Costco. Additionally, I used 8 LED can lights under the loft portion and the best choice was to add 4’ vertical lights on the wall next to where the lift is going to go so there will be additional light under the lift.

I need to update my lighting as well, been looking into led now that’s it’s way cheaper then it ever used to be

When I built my 3 bay garage, I used 18 double 6 foot fluorescent fixtures, controlled by 3 switches (one for each bay). Similar to Royce’s design. At the time (2001), LED bulbs in that size were an engineer’s dream.
What I learned since then: you never can have enough light. It’s better to disable some lights if too much light than to try and add additional lamps fixtures.

I used these. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-902003-k Excellent! Figure the amount you need, then add 2 more boxes!!! I tried Costco, Sams club, but the Summit Racing beard are the ones, connectable, extra wires, connections.

Yeah, those showed up the other day… umm it’s MY garage…
I don’t know what she is going to do with it, I already have one in my office and there’s one in the living room.

I was thinking of putting two of the LED’s on either side of the garage opener and then buy another set to run against the walls.
I like that you can run them in series.

I have 4 x 4’ LED units with two tubes each in each bay. Not enough light for working and it is always supplemented with LED work lights on stands

I’m about to replace each unit with the new 6000 lumin cool white units as they changed the wiring standard for LED tubes down here.

Still nowhere near as good as the old fluorescent tubes

Jeff, that’s very similar as to what they use in automotive paint spray booths. An idea from Chris, maybe?
I’m going to figure out a way to get light to shine up under a vehicle on the lift. As you may remember my last attempt with the 2 four foot fluorescent light boxes that I could put on the floor were always under foot. Literally!! I’d like to get something that works much better.

Good luck Ed, I’m going to be following along for all the good ideas.

That’s half the size of my 2 car garage

And I thought mine was disorganized!

Nice looking shops there Fellas  My employer is in the process of converting the entire shop facility from 220V 8ft dual fluorescent lamp fixtures to 4ft LED dual lamp fixtures. Twice the fixtures with a substantial projected energy cost savings that justifies the investment.
The light output seems to be brighter too… Better seeing what you’re working on is a good thing!

Did this with my indoor sports facility a few years ago. On paper the savings looks great. In practice not so much.

A lot of nice setups here. I used 18 two-bulb LED shop lights from Costco. Did this about three years ago and Costco still has these. They are on two switches. I had a buddy of mine do all the electrical conduit. Added a dedicated fuse panel but mostly for the wall mounted door opens, lift and HVAC. I have a rather cozy (32’x19’) three car garage and placed the lights where I thought I’d get the least shadows working on a vehicle next to a wall.

I put up 8 of these 48” LED strip lights from Home Depot in my 2 car garage…nice and bright now.

Seeing how I have 12 foot ceilings I went with the high bay lights. Really happy with them and need to get a couple more. On the expensive side about $80 bucks apiece from Menards. You pay based on lumens.Regardless, whatever you buy stay around 22,000 lumens. Lower than that number and the lighting will be yellow. Higher than that number and It will be blue. So, stay right in that range.

I went with wired in LED fixtures. Had them wired to a dimming switch. My shop is 40x48x18 and I have 3 at the 12’ 24’ 36’ Ceiling trusses. By seeing the shadows cast there is plenty of illumination. About 75.00 a fixture.
