Gas smell in my oil- fuel pump?

Looking for some guidance. I have my 1970 cougar I bought in 1979 when I was 15. I managed to hang onto it through the years. Usually break it out once or twice each year. It is running real rough and there is a strong gas smell on my oil. Should I start with the fuel pump? I can turn a wrench fine but am no mechanic. Thanks!

I would bet the diaphragm inside the fuel pump has failed. Another sign is if the oil level is abnormally high on the dip stick.

Yes indeed. The level was abnormally high. I will change the oil again, and install the new fuel pump, and go from there. Thanks!

Had similar problem with my ‘68 ….replaced gas pump and “post mortem” on it revealed deep cracks around edges of diaphragm. Pump was also slightly leaking thru weep hole above crimp. Don’t forget oil filter change even tho just changed oil.

You were right on. That took care of it. Changed oil and filter. It’s all clean, thanks!

It has a new carb and coil but runs rough and then dies unless I keep nursing the gas to keep it running. When I push the accelerator it misses and lacks power. Any ideas?
