Still… if you get rearended hard enough, the filler neck would sheer off and a lotta good that cover is going to do you then.
I think it’s more to protect the top of the tank (which acts as the trunk floor) than to protect the trunk from the fuel. I think every Cougar & Mustang I have owned or worked on had a dented tank top and I had more than one come into the garage back in the 70s and 80s complaining about a gas smell that we tracked down to a punctured tank.

I would think for extra protection, you could weld a metal flange around the bottom around the fuel spout and make a shroud that bolts to the tank cover and rear panel of the car. At least it would help stop fuel from shooting out to a point.
I like that tank armor. It looks a lot beefier. It looks like it could help stiffen up the car if some heavy duty hardware was used on it.
