Gas tank reconditioning

Morning, I had a friend tell me you could recondition your original cougar gas tank with Ospho metal treatment and rust preventive/coating pain. Has anyone tried this? Does it work?

I did it in the 80’s. I don’t remember which brand it was. It coated the inside of the tank ok and lasted for around 10 years. It started cracking at some point. I think with the contraction and expansion of the tank over that amount of time it is an inevitability. I think it would work longer on motorcycle tank. Or tanks that are not flexible. Gas tanks for 65-70 are cheap. Hundred bucks delivered if you watch the web sites long enough. I would not do it again. The cost of the sealer is at least 50% of a new tank. I would buy a new tank.

I watched the process on Stacy Davids Gears show. If was a tank that wasn’t reproduced, then yes. But since the tank is relatively inexpensive, i would just replace it. You have to remove the tank do all the cleaning and sealing, then replace it. With a new one its just remove and replace.

Im lazy.

Mine had the original 70 CA emissions tank which is not reproduced, so I looked into restoring it. But once I realized how it worked, I was happy to replace it with the standard 70 tank. Much nicer not to have the trunk smell like raw fuel vapor. Ford must have been desperate to meet the new air quality standards to design a system like that. So I agree - no need to mess with an old tank when you can get a new one at a reasonable price.

correct tank w/ drain 22 gallon… not 16 as in 1st posts ad

I would suggest that you coat your new tank with either Por 15 or KBS tank sealer. Both good and available on Amazon. You will save yourself problems later on if it happens to sit for awhile. You might look into getting a plastic float also, maybe even one of the stainless steel fuel senders.

If you do decide to replace the sender I will buy the oem original. Given that, I rebuild and calibrate the oem senders for $90 including a new float filter seal ring and return shipping.

I’m not a big fan of plastic floats. Of course I can’t say how many are good but I replace a lot of them. I use an improved design brass float and I have seen only a couple go bad in the past several years out of a few thousand.

Tank rust is caused by water not gas. It is a good idea to drive your car regularly to avoid building up water contamination
