Gasket

Is there supposed to be a cork gasket on the Inspection Cover (Manual trans)? There was one on mine when I took it off but cannot find a replacement gasket being offered…

My own answer (well, actually Darrell at WCCC). Presence of a cork gasket indicates a leaking rear main seal at some point in the past and this was a cheap fix for dripping oil.

Every one I have taken apart had a paper gasket on the top cover. You can buy them here:

Manual top loaders use a gasket, auto, no gasket on inspection plate.

Not the gasket for the top of the top-loader trans, the inspection cover (lower part of bell housing) had a cork gasket between the cover and the bellhousing.

Not supposed to be a gasket there. It has a crease in the middle so that if the rear main seal is leaking you will know, or if the transmission is leaking you would know. You wouldn’t want to seal that area!!!
