Gauge bulbs 73 Cougar XR7 convertible

Hi. I need to change a couple of bulbs in my gauges. How do i do that ? Do i need to dismantle “everything” or is there a short cut. Maybe there is a video og drwings on “how to” ? :unamused:

Remove your dash pads, screws are located externally around the perimeter and it only takes minutes.

Hi. What do you mean with “dash pads” ? I have tried to unscrew any screw nearby and nothing is moving. Do you have a picture or drawing showing this ? Regards Kai Ola

The Dash Pad is the is the soft part that covers your instrument panel and across to over the glove box. See link # 1 It attaches to the panel See Link #2 and if I remember correctly they both come out as one. There are 2 screws, one on the left and one on the right ( when you open the doors look at the side of the dash pad and you should see the holes. Be gentle because if original over the years they trend to crack by gripping them to rough. You may have to remove the instrument panel to change bulbs, I don’t remember its been awhile. That being said replace EVERY bulb, you don’t want to do this job very often :smoke:

In addition to the 2 screws that are only visible with the doors open there are also multiple screws that go up into the front edge of the pad. Look at the top of the instrument cluster surround and you will see the screw holes and then look above the glovebox door for several more. Once you have all those screws out the front edge of the pad should be loose and you should be able to lift it up a bit. Then you just need to pull it straight back toward you. The metal top piece will come along with the pad as you pull it back. The metal piece is held in place by 3 clips that will release as you pull it back.

You might be able to reach all the bulbs with just the dash pad and metal dash piece out of the way. You will be able to see 4 white pods at the top of each gauge pod with a bulb going in the front of it. Those should be pretty easy to change. There are more bulbs that go into the back of the cluster. If you do not have factory A/C you might be able to reach your hand in around from the top to find each of those bulbs. If you have A/C it will probably be easier to remove the whole cluster.

To remove the cluster first remove the woodgrain surround piece. There will be several screws in the area of the radio and heater controls. You will need to unplug the courtesy light and the oil and amp gauges. There are a few screws that hold the surround in place along the lower edge. You will see several access holes in the plastic dash frame slightly higher than the steering column. With all that done the surround should come off. The cluster is held in place then by 4 screws. You will need a good flashlight and a longer than normal phillips screwdriver to remove those 4 screws. Once the cluster is loose you will need to unplug the main feed to it. Squeeze it on the left and right side and it should pull right out. Then you will need to unplug the tach. With all that done you can remove the cluster and replace the bulbs.

Good luck. I hope that this helps you.
