General consensus on Mods to classic Cougars?

Hi Guys,
A new mbr & this is my first time post.

I just recently bought my first classic, 1970 cougar XR7 (also am working on a '67 Cyclone) and want to do some Mods to it like convert it from AT to a manual Tremec 5 spd, convert it to a power Rack & Pinion, and (gasp) get rid of the carb and manual fuel pump and convert it to one of the new EFI systems (MSD?) + headers & finally shoe it with torq-thrust 15" wheels. I want to make it something that is fun & reliable to drive anyday and improve the fuel economy and performance over stock too.

I’m of the age where I can afford to do the mods and assist in most of them.

What do you guys think? I appreciate all input.

'70 XR7 351"M code", AT
'67 Cyclone GTA 390 “S code” AT but planning to put another M-code Cleveland into it
'07 Chev K2500HD Duramax

Trick Flow makes a lower intake for the Cleveland that will let you use the Ford EFI system.

As for the rest, I think you’re the boss on your car. Do whatever you want.

What’s missing in my opinion is:
Replacing the rod cap hardware and valves/springs in the Cleveland. Switching to electronic ignition. Going to 16" wheels instead of 15". Suspension work.

First off let me say welcome to the Classic Cougar Community. Second build your Cougar to make you happy.

Welcome! Modifications are generally well-received if they are done well and are a clear functional or visual improvement. The only real exception to that rule is when the car in question is a very rare model or has some historical significance. People would frown on heavily modifying a '68 GT-E or 69 R-code, for example, if the car was still in condition to be properly saved and restored.

The mods you’re considering are fairly popular and will add to the value of your car, IMHO, if done well.

I’ll 2nd the welcome to the CCC :beerchug: and how about some pictures of your cat? And ditto the other suggestions, its your car, do it the way you want. Not everyone is going to like everything if its stock or mod’d but you will be driving / enjoying the ride :smoke:

Bill saved me a lot of typing. So in your case, knock yourself out and good luck!

Pictures! And, welcome to CCC. I agree that you should do what you want with it, and would love to do many of the mods you mentioned above too.

Thanks Guys.

I work over seas and don’t have any pics with me but will describe my Cat…has the factory gold paint with the Brown Hounds-tooth top and interior. I’ll take pics when I return next month and post.

I am intrigued by the suggestion to add the lower intake and then put a factory Ford EFI (TBI?) system on from a donor Ford…think I might look into that on my Cyclone but want to keep the OE look of a carberator on the Cat. Hadn’t thought of 16" wheels…Hmmm. Might have to investigate that! Thanks ALL!

Yours, Jdhank

Houndstooth cars are super cool. The intake I linked lets you use the multiport fi system like on the Mustang, Tbird/Cougar, etc.
