With that level of restoration he has just as much time and almost as much money as restoring a real GT E without the value in the end. The real winner will be the next owner that buys it reasonable and get the driving enjoyment out of it. It has fun driver written all over it
I think a real one restored to this level is worth more than $125k.
I would guesstimate $225-250,000, for a concours restored R code GT-E with 4 speed. There were only 3 ever built, right? Two survive?
The GT-E is actually pretty easy to clone compared to an XR7-G. The only special parts (discounting the 427 or 428CJ) are the two fender badges and the trim down the sides and headlights. So I tend to look at this mostly as a very nicely done 428CJ clone with some nice trim. Sure makes me think about sticking a 428 in a 4 speed XR7ā¦
Maybe just maybe the Gs will catch up to the GTEs one day
Nice looking car. Wonder what the reserve is? One thing I have been perplexed with on most all the cars we see that had a bunch of money stuck in to them is why they donāt put more effort into getting the grills straight? Itās the first thing that jumps out at a guy.
Bill mentioning that a GTE is pretty easy to clone also has me wondering. Isnāt that side trim quite rare for a guy to get his hands on? I thought at one time about just doing 2-tone on my car using the repro trim that I seen on WCCC, but I doubt that will ever be made again.
Very nice! Would be amazing to drive I am sure. Difficult to build that for less than $75K in my opinion. So yes, hopefully someone buys it to have fun. If it was a real one - it would be too valuable to drive and enjoyā¦
That used to be the case but right now every GT-E trim element is available as a fairly good looking repop.
Not so the actual cars. Or the actual correctly date coded engines and their parts. Or a VIN stamped transmission. Or a VIN stamped head that is still with the car.
Itās nice, but drivable and parts can be replaced.
Until Royce sells me the green GTE on payments and I start a āgo fund meā GTE contribution down payment, Iād probably consider a clone.
Isnāt it the Gs that only had 3 CJ 4speeds?
I found this on performance.ford.com as to the breakdown of the 1968 428 Gās by engine/transmission:
428-4V Auto 11 - Engine R/Trans U
428-4V 4-Speed 3 - Engine R/Trans 5
Same 4-speed production as for the GT-E.

Bidding ended today. The reserve wasnāt met. High bid: $46,000
Relisted today at a buy it now 125K or offer.
Seller seams to think itās worth real GTE money !
Itās a shame all the time and money but I donāt think itāll go much higher
Not sure what itās worth, but more than $46K and less than $125K.
I wanted to go see it in personā¦but at $125k, Iāll pass. I was in at $50k, because I would do a color change. So all in at $60 ish. It exactly what I want, except for the color, and there is no comprising.
What color would you do ?
Iām just in love with Augusta greenā¦for that money, I could buy the low mileage car that was for sale for $35k and make it a clone GTEā¦hmmm got me thinking
