John Baumann old GT-E

Beautiful GTE. Didn’t this car sell a while back unrestored in the 60k neighborhood? What’s the thoughts on the price of this one? I’m guessing near the 100k mark closer to 90k.
Steven

I need it! Where’s my lottery ticket?

This car was on Ebay just before Gunner sold…same pictures…

Where are the rest of the photos? No front seat pic?

John offered me that car $7500 just after he got it. It pains me to recall the conversation. He had two GT-Es at the time. Both were for sale. which ever one sold first, he was gunna keep the other. I think Royce as offered the car before John bought it (believed to be a 390 car) for $1500.

Gee, our old LaSalle ran great…those were the days. -Archie Bunker

Yup the car belonged to a used car lot in Texas. Guy called me and said he had a 390-4V XR-7 '68 Cougar, automatic with no air conditioning and hit on the passenger door post. Green with green interior and not running. Asking price $1500. I foolishly did not go look at it.

Then the guy calls John Baumann. John wisely asked what the VIN was and scored.

Royce: does this mean that the car has a replacement driveline or is it the original born with driveline?
Joe.

It’s numbers matching according to Mecum’s website listing. I think the car lot that offered it to Royce had mistaken it for a s code 390 car instead of a w code 427 GTE.
Steven

Wow, one of these days, I’m going to fall in a pile o pooh, and come out smelling like a rose that way…one o these days……LOL.

No it means the guy trying to sell me the car did not know the difference between a 390 and a 427. He also did not know that a W in the VIN means 427, and did not know that 7.0 Litres is 427 cubic inches. It also means I foolishly did not bother to go look at the car, and missed the deal of a lifetime as a consequence.

By the way several GT-E’s came with rear seat shoulder harnesses. This is the only Augusta Green / XR-7 / W code GT-E with the rear seat harnesses.

Make room in that pile for me!
Steven

Want!

Off to the store to buy an energy drink and a powerball ticket.

We’ll it looks like the time is here. Anyone got a guess on what it will bring?

Mike

I put my guess on the GT-E at 90-100k. I think closer to 90 though. A modified red 1967 standard with a 302 sold Thursday for 12,500. Clean looking car, I just wasn’t keen on the Eliminator hood scoop and rear deck spoiler.
Steven

Anyone know if there is a reserve on this one?

I believe I’ve seen this car within the past year. If it is the same car, it is a nice one. But I’m feeling a bit concerned about the market for this car. It’s not going to go B-J (at least I doubt it) and my gut tells me $70-$75K I have no idea why I feel this way, I just do. I think the price is going to be a major disappointment and may not hit the reserve (if it has one).

Good luck to seller and buyer! I wish I could be the winner, but I won’t even be a bidder. :frowning:

The Reserve thing has me a bit worried too…this could be very anti-climatic. Maybe

There are some cars doing very well, it seems. I think the market is just fine for rare original cars. And even the Dime a Dozen Camaros are still bringing rediculous $. However I also noticed a 427 Yenko just went today for less than 70K. Ouch. And Run of the Mill 350 cars are going for 35-55K. One never knows how original and well done a car is without being there in person, though.

I do know that the buyer of Gunner is there, as is the expert that inspected my car for him. He said he’s not a buyer of this Green car only because of the color. He and his friends are in-the-know with a lot of people with a lot of money, though…and this car is a good piece. This could be interesting.

I don’t think the reserve will hold it back. Mecum auction crew works the seller pretty good when a car gets close to the reserve price to drop the reserve. If this happens at the right time the bidding can take off.

I saw a trend at this auction where cars without their original engine (Chevelles,GTO’s,Mopars) bringing strong money well north of 50k. Fingers crossed I hope the GT-E does well.
Steven

This Fairlane 427 just sold…$ 92,500

Pretty good…

Bidding goes on at 70k. I wonder what it will bring, if it meets reserve. Was suprised to hear the auctioneer start the bidding at 150k.
