In my youth (Yes I was young once), There was a parking lot accross from Beeks Pizza in Crystal Minn. where people liked to hang out. I was in my 1st Nordic Blue GTE and was cruzing the lot (You know Trying to look cool) and someone yells out "Light em up !
Not something I normally did but in this case Good judgement went out my open window. So with just enough brake to get the tires spinning with the 3.89TL axle and then releasing them. I watch in amasment as my speed quickly hit 100mph amd the C6 was in high gear. The car itself was barely creeping. So much so the the COP walked right up to my window to flash his badge and tell me to “shut it down”. Luckly I got out of it with just a warning. But Everyone was standing around laughing…Altho there were a few “Awsome Burnout” coments heard !
LOL, with MY luck, that cop would have been my DAD…(and yes, he HAS pulled me over…TWICE!)…though once was just to say hi and see what/who I was up to/getting into trouble with. The other time…passed HIM doing 60…in a 40…OOOOPS!!!
I got caught with my first Cougar at 147 mph, but luckyly, it was my friend’s dad, No ticket, and no car impound. I did get an awful earfull though…
Still had some gas to give it, but it was floating between lanes. Must have taken me a mile to stop. One only hopes one can outgrow stupidity. Mind you, I wouldn’t do it again, BUT no regrets.
My luck tends to run the other direction. I get pulled over for a burned out tail light bulb, and end up almost going to jail.
I can relate. Pretty much the same here. Almost got a “fix-it” ticket for not running the “county” sticker on the license plate. Registration was all up to snuff. But I never received the county sticker in the mail. Never bothered to get one from the local bureau either.
hahaha, i went around for 2 months in mt 77 t-bird, with a 400, and a blown muffler. One co-worker was always ribbing me, saying i would get caught one of these days… Always put it in neutral, and let go of the gas when seeing a police car. I couldn’t afford the repair.
This guy blew his muffler on the way to work one morning, and got ticketed 3 city blocks later.
Luck just has to drift your way once in a while.
That wasn’t the story you were telling me about that “other” Bill Basore here in the Tulsa area, was it??? Depending on the year, THAT coulda been my pops, too…LMAO. He was TPD from '68-'91…
No, I was thinking about the first time I got pulled over in the CJ car. Seems that the tag had expired, and it just went down hill from there.
So I pulled up to the stop sign at a tee in the road at the edge of town. My buddy Randy lived in the house on the right and was sitting in the yard and as I turned right hollered out “let’s here it!” So after the slow turn I nailed it in my 71 Mach1 with a built boss 351 and proceeded to do my pro stock like burn out just keeping it straight as I ripped it again in second. The road had a very slow rise to a defunct RR crossing and 2 blocks the other side sat the small town cops whom I could not see until I had crossed where the tracks used to run. The red lights came on and I actually just pulled in behind where they were sitting and received my second “improper starting from a stopped position” ticket that summer.
Got busted at 17 doing 76+ (I was still in it when I passed where the fuzz was camped out behind the FD) in a 45 zone.
Cop was the big brother of a real dweeb I beat up the year before.
No breaks for me on that deal.
Went to court and got a prayer for judgement that deferred the charge unless I got another. Was very very careful after that.
I at least stopped doing triple digits in town. Found out what a great road trip car my Cougar was and proceeded to love the sound of the Cleveland on the highway. Pretty much stopped redlight racing in my car after that. Got my buddy’s 67 ss396 in lots of races though. His parents could afford it.
Don, was that GTE a XR7 or standard, and if standard did it have standard or decor interior? The reason is, I have a standard Nordic blue GTE with med.blue decor interior( R/C )1of 2 and the only one known to exist, just checking to see if that could have been the twin.
Mine was an XR7 with dark blue leather and a white vinyl top.
Nice combination, thanks for the reply
All right Mercury Don , this thread really collides with my past.
The day JFK was assassinated, my father buys 2 cars from Marc-Allen Motors . located just east of Swanberg and Scheefe
Buick on Lake Street. The average car was a 1963 Chevy Impala SS. The destroyer was a 1963 Galaxy 500 XL , box top ,
406 3x2bbl , fact 385 HP , with factory cut outs for exhaust ? Previous owner was son of Woody /Harrier Ford on Lake Street. Son had accumulated so many tickets , his license was beyond reach and his future was Viet Nam. By the time we took car home, it was on it’s 3rd set of Uniroyal Laredo’s. Fast forward to fall of 1967 and I begin my 1 st of 3 years with Southdale Ford. I was the " Lot Boy ". In this age of innocence, we kept the keys in all of the 150 - 225 used cars on the lot
everyday. I pulled keys every night. By spring of 1969, hooliganism produced the need for me to pull every new Mustang into the service garage that had a shaker hood , or rear window slats. My first " Ticket " was for WTF was that. I pull out onto 69th street just south of where Southdale Mall is. 1969 , 428 SCJ , chrome slapper/traction bars , NHRA stickers, shaker and slats. As I go past Cinema 1+2 there is nothing but tire smoke as I go from first to second on the C-6. Edina’s finest is going westbound the other way and officer is giving me hand signals I can NOT decipher. I turn around @ stop sign @ Key Cadilliac , and I’ll be darned if the officer has not pulled a U turn and see’s me headed back into dealership. Speed was never determined, but my manager was a Gopher legend, so I received a warning. Next time I will tell you about driving the 1966 Old’s Cutlass - " Fleury-Mann , Conquistador 442 , National Record holder C/S NHRA car on the street with slicks and open headers. And yes it was Lake Street. We did live in the sweetest of times.
Somehow I will get pictures of the 67/8 Barry’s Speed shop car up this week. I need technical help… thx, for the memories. Jim
My current 68 has that same color combination but it is not a GTE. Still love it though. I had a 67 with a 289 4v back in 1975 when I was 16 and I got pulled over for something and the cop looks at my license and sees my last name and says
“not another Bern___!” Seems my older brother with his 67 440 GTX had had a few run ins with this officer!
