Happy 50th Birthday, Cougar Eliminator!

Happy Birthday to the 1969 Eliminator!

With the first scheduled build dates of April 1st, 1969, today marks the 50th Birthday of the 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. By the end of '69 Cougar production a total of 2,250 Eliminators would be built in various configurations - many of them unique by virtue of the wide variety of options available. Whether you were buying a sporty low-option driver with only a 351W-4V, 3-speed manual, and maybe an AM-Radio, or you were going for a stylish, comfortable cruiser with a 428CJ, C6 automatic, power windows and AC that would hold its own in boulevard brawls, the Eliminator made a statement: Lincoln-Mercury’s Muscle Cars Mean Business!

Now, lets see some pics!

Mine has a scheduled build date of April 17!
And I’m sure alot of you have earlier cars? So share those dates!

New Eliminator book coming out soon.

Any idea on the price? I want one but depends on price.

428 SCJ build date 04/10/ 69, invoice prepared 04/17/69 shipped 04/26/69

If the Eliminator book follows the previous books (Big Book Of Cougar, GTE book, & XR-7G book) the price should be in the $35-$40 range.

Price really should not be an issue.
We all buy things like models, calendars, etc. that look like our Cat or Wishcat.
Why not buy a book & pick up an extra to show support.

In fact, I’ll buy 2 for my self & 4 to give away at the next 2 CougarFests!

Thanks Don & Mike & Dave and all the others for their dedication to these very

COOL CATS!!!

Michael Banks, do you have any stats to share? Accounted for cars built in the first week ? And maybe in the first month?

Michael, your first statement says “With the first scheduled build dates of April 1st, 1969, today marks the 50th Birthday of the 1969 Mercury Cougar Eliminator. By the end of '69 Cougar production a total of 2,250 Eliminators would be built in various configurations…”.

I had always assumed the 69 Eliminators were built in 1968 and the 70 Eliminators in 1969. So if the 69s were scheduled to start on 4/1/19, when did the 69s stop getting built? My 70 Eliminator was scheduled to be built on 9/19/69 but wasn’t actually built till 10/2/69.

The Eliminator package was a mid year introduction that is why 1969 production started later in the production year.

Normal model year plant changeover occurs in July/August of any given year.
As Randy stated the 1969 Eliminator was a midyear introduction with assembly beginning in April of 1969 and the last one being produced in late June of 1969.
From some data that Lois Eminger had put together we know the earliest known 1970 production have an initial invoice prepared date of 8/11/1969. The last 1970 units were produced in the summer of 1970.

Thanks Dave. It’s crazy all the 69s were produced in 3 months and the 70s were spread over possibly 8 or 9 months.
