Harmonic balancer/pulley

So I’m almost done with tear down of my 390 for a build and had a question. My crank pulley is a double. 1 pulley is independent and bolted to the front of the balancer… the other always to be part of the balance. Is this normal for the FE engines? I’ve only seen this kind of set up in serpentine belt set ups. Is there any problem using an aftermarket balancer and pulley? I would think it would throw belt alignment off.

Not sure why you would want to use an aftermarket balancer. The 1967 factory balancer on the 390 has an integral pulley. See here:
