Harmonic balancer

Will a harmonic balancer from a 72 351cleveland 2v fit or work on a 72 351cleveland 4v cobra jet? I heard it won’t is this true?
Thanks

If I recall the CJ balancer is thicket then the 2V one. So I would say no. But look at the casting numbers on it and look to see how they match up.

I believe either will work fine. Just that the CJ one is more gooder.

More gooder! Lol
So if I were to use the Harmonic balancer of the 2v wouldn’t I have to use the flywheel? Cause it has weights also

The only reason I’d like to use it is because the one off the 2v is brand new. The markings are really easy to read very nice

You can always put tape on the old one. It makes the markings as good as new.

No, you need both. Both the counterweighting in the balancer and the flywheel are required for small block Ford externally balanced engines.

What’s more gooder about the CJ balancer is not the counterweighting but the overall weighting which makes it more capable as far as dampening crankshaft vibrations from the cylinders setting up stresses/flexing the crank.

Oh
That makes sense

As a side note - Here’s what can happen if the balancer-crank-flywheel relationship is incorrect i.e. using an externally balanced flywheel on an internally balanced engine (in this case later 460 flywheel on an early 460):

So
I removed the spacer plate from the motor from eBay (351cleveland 4v cobra jet) because it was all bent up. When I took the fly wheel off to exchange them from my original 2v motor I noticed the flywheel from the eBay 4v CJ has a slight bend to it. I would like to use the new one I bought for the 2v Cleveland. Can I do that and if so do I have to use the new harmonic balancer I also have on the 2v cleveland also (which I’d like to because it so easy to read)

And does it matter that I have a FMX tranny? All the ones I see is for a C6 tranny. If so why what’s the difference between an FMX flexplate and a C6 flexplate?

You seem to know quite a bit about these car/ motor. Could I trouble you to pm me so we could talk via phone. I have a few questions that would be easier to talk about on the phone then posts. If I can figure out if this site has pm’s. lol thanks

You need the FMX flexplate.

Hello
Yes I just installed the harmonic balancer off the 2v motor and put it on the 4v cobra jet. Just waiting to hear back from you before in install the flex plate or fly wheel from my 3v to the cobra jet motor.
Well if you figure that’s the wright thing to do I’ll switch them over.
I had to make sure before I install the motor!

Thanks

No problem. PM’ed you.

Nice to meet you (well on the phone anyway) and talk today Butch. Best of luck with your new engine and hope I was helpful. Keep me (or us) posted on how things go.

Regards,

Robert

The pleasure was all mine. Nice to talk to a fellow Ford or should I say Mercury owner. Where I’m from next to no Cougar owners.
Thanks for your information on the manifold gaskets not even the collage teacher knew about that or he would have reassured me it was ok.
Yes I will keep you posted and let you know if I’m getting a divorce or not. lol just kidding

Thanks for the info. I went to the web site you gave me and purchased a flexplate for 72-73 351 CJ but it never said what tranny it’s for. Hope it works on the FMX transmission. How will I know if it’s going to work or not?

All M and Q (CJ) code 351C-4V engines came from the factory with a C6 transmissions unless it was a 4 speed manual.
