Headlight Door Emblem Installation

Passenger side headlight door emblem (only) installation - 68 cougar XR7. I would sure like some help and suggestioins how to install this emblem (the emblem consists of a Cougar over a black background with the word ‘Cougar’ at the base of the black background , size about 2inches by 6; the corral that holds this emblem is in good shape and does not need to be removed)…Thanks, Bev.

The corral has to be removed to replace the background. I raised the headlight door and ground the mushroomed rivet head off that holds the unit in place. I replaced the whole walking Cougar assembly. The kit is available at West Coast Classic Cougars. I used automotive sealant to reattach the assembly. I used blue masking to hold it in place while the sealant dried. If not you have to remove the headlight door so the corral post that hold the unit in place can be (peened) mushroomed over. This is one of the biggest improvements you can make to your Cougar. Looks awesome when done.

I drilled and tapped the plaque for #6-32 screws to replace the rivets prior to installing the metal emblem. Makes it easy and secure when installed.

that is what I am gonna do!

Letsroll …thanks for gtting back to me. . Would you give me a few more details on your procedure, ie: how did you remove the old plate, did you use glue on the new plate, how many screws did you use and where did you place them. My car is all original with very low mileage hence the corral is in exeellent condition,; I really don’t want to remove it if I don’t need to…Thanks again, Bev

You may want to consider leaving it as is. Originality is everything.

Thanks evereyone, good information from you all, I’ll leave it there…Bev

i did like royce but i used 2-56 or 4-40—drilled right down the remaiming rivit body but not thru—thr screws just hold it on and the rivits locate it—i moved the cat down .250 inch and made a new background out of textures black abs(camera case style)—the results are the cat but no wording

I just stumbled upon this topic. I need to this repair as well.

I also need to change the background behind my Mercury Man in the center grille emblem. Would the same method be used for that as well?

This is really easy if you replace the corral and the emblem and the back ground all together. The new emblem has studs on the back of it to secure it to the corral, and the corral has studs on it long enough to attach it to the headlight door. The whole job can be done with the headlight door still attached to the car. The hardest part is prying the old corral off the headlight door with out messing up the door.

No, it’s pretty simple. If the center grille section is still attached to the rest of the grille, remove the medallion by removing the 2 nuts (not sure what size socket) on the back side (it’s easier if you have the center grille section out IMO. If the center grille section is out, then you don’t have to remove the 2 nuts). On the back side of the medallion, clean the sealant around the stud of the Mercury Man head, then spray like WD-40 on the stud and tap the MM head out gently (the MM head is plastic). Once the MM head is removed then remove the background. Good luck. John
