Just ordered this from WCCC. I think the rag joint on mine is worn, so the door doesn’t completely close.
Any guidance on remove and replace? I’ve been told to remove the spring first. Anything else? Thx

The Ford service manual is an excellent source for that information.
The shaft assemblies vary by model year so for help here you need to specify that.
Thx.
Year and model is always in my signature block. 1970 Cougar. 351W
Missed it in the signature block, hiding behind the formatting [CCCGallery]… stuff.
The procedure is in the Radiator Grill section of the service manual 48-2-3.
Start with the springs
Remove the cotter keys from the shaft
Disconnect the vacuum motor
Remove the nuts retaining the covers to the shaft
Slide the cover center shaft sideways and disconnect it from the cover shaft
The remaining steps seem to be just to remove the grill pieces
Before you tear it apart check the plastic shaft bushings on each side of the shaft at both the center support and the inboard side of the headlight cover. They break and fall out. It can leave too much slop in the linkage.
Volume 4. 48-02-03. Radiator grille removal.
I got it apart and back together. Took a little persuading to separate the center shaft from the headlight cover shaft.
I’d sure like to see the rag joints for the headlight door shafts reproduced. Maybe in urethane?
