Headlights turn off

Hello and Good afternoon Cougar fans. I have a question for anyone this might have happened to.

I have a 1979 Mercury Cougar XR7. At times when driving at night my headlights turn off intermittently and then turn back on. I also depress the high beam foot button which was just replaced and the headlights turn back on. Not sure if pressing it causes something to happen or it’s just coincidence. Can someone provide an explanation for this issue and provide a resolution? Thank you.

Sounds like the circuit breaker in the light switch is being tripped. What type of headlights are you using? (CB may be defective or extra load from non-original headlight bulbs)

This is a typical result when someone mistakenly installs halogen headlamp bulbs. You can fix the problem easily by either installing original type bulbs or LED bulbs.

I did have that happen in the 1971 XR-7 I use to have. It had original type bulbs. Sometimes the circuit braker gets week and will release at a lower current draw. You may need a new switch id=f you have original incandescent bulbs all ready.

I have the headlight that the car came with. Just replaced them with new ones. The switch as well has been replaced. I’m stumped

Can anyone provide me with the part number and location of my headlight relay for my 1979 mercury cougar XR7? Thanking you all in advance.

Are you reading the replies? It’s most likely the effect of installing halogen headlights that pull too much current for the circuit breaker in the headlight switch.

There is no relay in the factory headlight circuit. There are aftermarket headlight relay harnesses available. Rocketman makes a reasonably priced relay harness: Rocketman’s Classic Cougar Innovations
