Help! Electric Choke hook up on 69 Cougar

Is there a step by step video or pictures on how to hook up electric choke on a 69 cougar xr7. I am having issues understanding where to connect/obtain the switched 12v. I’ve already tried using a relay to hook up from starter solenoid, but I’m not getting a switch 12v from there either. Thank you in advance for patience and help!!!

The best way is to connect it to the STA post of the alternator. This way the choke only heats and opens when the engine is running - not because the ignition is on.

The other way would be switched 12V, which means if the engine doesn’t start the choke will still be opening.

You can run a wire from any switched accessory (such as the radio) inside the car to the choke, or you can use a relay ‘under the hood’.
Wire the relay like so:

Pin 30 = battery +
Pin 87 = Choke
Pin 86 = Starter solenoid ‘I’ post
Pin 85 = Ground

Or, if you are electrically challenged, get one of these:

Awesome !! Thank you for the link! I doubled checked my relay was hooked up the exact same way as you recommended. For some reason I’m still not getting 12v to I side on the starter solenoid.I am going to try the STA post. If that doesn’t work. I’ll try one of those ignition adapter. Thank you @TheRktmn !

STA post is the one to hook to it is only hot when cranking & running.

In a car with stock wiring, you’ll only get 12 volts at the I terminal when cranking. When the key is in the run position, you’ll get whatever your coil input voltage is, which should be enough to keep the relay closed after the 12 volts at cranking pulls it in.

Even if you’re not electrically challenged, (electrical engineer here) and just like a clean installation, that looks well worth the money.

Does the relay coil inductance affect an original in series tachometer’s accuracy?

STA terminal on the alternator is where Ford connected the electric choke in later years. Be sure to include a fuse in the line.

I really appreciate all the responses. I’m hoping to get it done soon. I’ll post once installed .

I have mine on the STA terminal and it has worked great ever since.

@PonyCarMan : No, the coil inductance does not seem effect the factory coil. The initial activation is during the start cycle, once in run mode the relay is only being held closed and the resistance is minimal.

STA terminal on the Alternator is how my electric choke is done on my 69 351w.

There’s no common circuit between the alternator and the coil so I frankly can’t see how there would be any effect.
