Guys, this is a problem driving me nuts! it’s with the “new” rim-blow steering wheel. The car is a ‘69 XL, but let’s pretend it’s a ‘69 Cougar for the moment.
The issue I have is that the shank on the rim-blow is too tall and the contact pins on the column stand too far away to contact the rings on the back of the steering wheel. I did buy the turn signal cam from WCCC and it fits perfectly on my rim-blow so that is not the problem. Btw, this car is a cruise control tilt column.
Could I be missing an adapter or something??
Thanks for all responses! I try to attach 2 pictures.
just a few questions:
You state the rimblow is “new”. Is that a new repop? or a new to the car.
I see 1968 on the lower pic. I’m not sure if the 69’s used carryover , Mustang, or that the 1968 is just the date used for the 69 year model run.
If this is a true 69 the diameter of the wheel is smaller (IIRC) than 68 wheels, and the 68’s did not have rim blow, so kinda confused here.
Looking closer to the pics they show the steel hub is taller in the top pic, a measurement will help.
Take the tilt canceller(s) off take a few more pics & show measurements… I think that is where we might find the answer
Bill, thanks for responding.
Yes, it’s a 1969 Ford original rim-blow wheel. The car is a ‘69 XL with a tilt wheel and cruise control.
I have done continuity tests on the wheel AND on the contact pins in the column and both were fine.
I put the car back in storage, but yes the shank of the rim-blow is approximately 1/4” taller, maybe less, than the cruise control wheel.
I’ve taken every possible measurement regarding the alignment of the pins and the rings, they line up perfectly.
I also cleaned the rings and they are spotless. I have tested the wheel using jumpers off the column and the horn blows. I’ve also testes the column pins without the steering wheel and the horn blows.
Hi Bill, here are some closeup shots of the back of my two steering wheels indicating the different dimensions. I, for the life of me, cannot figure out why my rim-blow does not work! Any help would be appreciated. The green cam is from the cruise control who and the black cam is the rim-blow.
Guys, I’ve done all the testing I could think of and reached the conclusion that there is some ground wiring issue inside the turn signal switch. Rather than replace it, I just ran a wire from the ground post to the steering wheel to the steering rod. Yes, it’s ugly and I’ll replace these with proper eyelets, but my rim-blow works perfectly. Any danger in doing this? Other thoughts?
