Hertz G dip stick handle (390GT) - chrome or Ford Blue

My Hertz G project currently has a very rusted dip stick which used to be chrome. Has C7OE-6750-A stamped on it. There are no guarantees that it was original. Since I need to shop for a new one it would be nice if get the correct one for a Hertz G. So Chrome or Ford Blue on the Hertz G’s ?

All Gs had the engine dressup kit. It was slightly different than regular Cougars, but a chrome engine oil dipstick was included.

The dipstick and tube are available from Summit Racing in reproduction. They are pretty decent I have used several of them.

I would say so also. The 1968 S code 390 GT Performance Group Option (which Hertz Gs started out with) included the chrome dress up kit with, among other things, a chrome engine oil dipstick handle.

But I wonder about the X code Gs? I will look into that.

The XR7-G was different from most 390 GT’s in that it did not get an engine dress up kit. It did however receive chrome valve covers and dipstick handle. The dress up kit included a chrome air cleaner lid, chrome master cylinder cover, and chrome radiator cap. Those items were not included in the XR7-G option.

Fascinating, thanks Royce. Obviously, the snorkel was different in non-Hertz S code Gs, but didn’t they keep the GT chrome air cleaner lid?

And the X code Gs got a blue lid, correct?

The chrome lid was part of the engine dress up package in 1968 so the Hertz XR7-G’s did not get it. Some of the other XR7-G’s might have the engine dress up option if so it will be on the Marti Report.

More to clarify the issue - 390GT engines NOT installed in an XR7-G would get a chrome air cleaner lid. This is not to be confused with the engine compartment dress up kit. I think the engine compartment dress up kit was mostly an option for the 289 or 302 in 1968 model year because it included chromed valve covers, chrome air cleaner lid, chrome master cylinder cap, a chromed dipstick handle and a chromed radiator cap.

If you ordered such an option for either the 428CJ or the 390GT it would not make sense because those engines already came with a chromed set of valve covers and a chromed dipstick handle. So far as I know that was not the case on any XR7-G that I have seen a Marti Report on.

It gets even more confusing on XR7-G’s. The factory seems to have been pretty consistent with the Hertz order, most of those cars were built in February or March of 1968 and none of them seems to have a chromed air cleaner lid. Where it gets confusing is any XR7-G with a 390 ordered after the Hertz order was completed. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for air cleaner lids for the 390-2V or 390-4V(GT). The 302-2V and 302-4V seem to consistently have blue painted air cleaner tops.

Thanks for the clarification. Chrome it was, chrome it shall be again. Going to be a while as I cannot find any in stock anywhere.

thanks for looking for me, but that one doesn’t have the correct markings. just has the oil level. I have time, so I am going to hold out until I can get one of the Scott Drake ones, or a good used one.

Not sure what you are looking at but this guy is selling the same reproduction that Scott Drake sells.

WCCC offers (offered ?) concours correct ones with the Ford logo and part number. Out of Stock of course… When I look around the web for them, I see lots of sellers listing them as Scott Drake with the concours correct markings, but they are always shown as out of stock. Based on what you said I suspect that Scott Drake dropped the Ford logo and part number.
