Frustrating issue…I have a ‘68 DGS cat with the 302, 4BBL Holly carb. PS, PB, AC…..re did vacuum hoses a few years back, new fuel pump last year due to pump diaphragm leak out the weep hole and new gas filter. Don’t drive her a lot but start her up every week and nice local drive 1x month weather permitting (she’s my baby). When warmed up and idling at stop, when I accelerate even slowly, the engine hesitates and then kicks in. When I give her gas too fast she will sometimes stall but start right away when slipped into N and cranked. Also starts hard having to crank several times but write that off to gas draining back when sitting. Any ideas? Had similar issue 8-9 years ago and had carb rebuilt and had a “stiff accelerator pump” per mechanic. Same issue so soon?…thanks in advance for any and all help.
Check out the accelerator pump is working on the carburetor. With the engine off look down the primary side of the carburetor while opening the throttle. You should see two jets of fuel entering the venturi.
I would start with the distributor. Clean the contacts inside the distributor cap, clean points, reset dwell, check advance hose and springs inside distributor to be sure the plate is free to rotate. If you have electronic ignition I would look at the accelerator pump diagram thing again. Without a bit of a squirt it would act as you describe. Ethanol is not friendly. Today’s replacement parts are not high quality unless you do research and pay the higher amount.
