I should also note. Jan-O was the one who mentioned this. So credit where due.
So I used the good advice here and have managed to align the hood on my '70 with respect to side-to-side and height at the cowl. Big improvements.
However, I can’t figure out why the hood remains too far forward. I have about an extra 1/2" of space beyond what I’d like at the cowl gap. Hood is all the way back/down in the slots on the hinges where they connect to the underside of the hood. Ideas?
Dont be afraid to bend your extensions and hood lip by hand once you know you have correct spacing against the cowl.
Here is a video we just completed on the subject.
Thanks Don! Great video.
I think perhaps the holes where my hinges mount to the inner fenders may be off due to a past accident or something. No amount of adjusting around those three bolts that connect the hinge to the fender is going to slide my hood back any further.
The only way they could be forward is if the apron was replaced incorrectly. My bet is your hinges are fatigued. Did you get the coupon code we emailed out to all our subscribers for 20% off on these hinges?
Thanks Don!
Yes, that’s with your new hinges. They work great. No telling why my hood is too far forward then. I’ll just have to make the top holes a bit longer so I can slide the hood back 1/2 an inch.
I am hoping someone can help me get my hood adjusted correctly, I have watch the video from WCCC snd it helped, but my issue doesn’t seem to be part of it. The cowl and the hood seem to be about a 1/4 inch off and I am wondering if the clips on the hood could be the cause. I bought new hood hinges and springs after the drivers side broke and sent the rivet flying.
Here is the ultimate fix.
Don,
I have watched that video a lot and I still do not see how I can get the hood aligned with the cowl. I can get it level with the cowl, match the gap at the hood/cowl but the edges of the hood are still off by about a 1/4". I measured the hinges I removed and they are the same as the new ones, any other hints?
The order of battle:
Align hood to cowl
Align doors to sill plate, rear quarter, and a pillar
Align fenders with hood and doors.
This is the way, I spent so much time at this stage it wasn’t even funny. Even still I could not make mine perfect, after all its a 50yr old car with who knows how many miles and life experiences.
