I can’t seem to get the front of the hood to be solid without play at the latch and the two adjusting “mushrooms” at each side.
Is everything just worn out? The hood seems loose at the latch no matter what, and the adjusters ( sorry, I don’t know what they are called) run out of thread to get it tight. Even then, the hood gets pushed up a bit and then the alignment looks crummy.
Sounds like the latch itself needs to adjust lower rather than the adjusters upward. Also, does the rear of the hood tend to pop up when you close it? Loose hinge bushings can cause that, and it can throw alignment off too.
That’s what I thought as well. But the lower you move the latch, the more play there is at the nose of the hood. Eventually the latch won’t even engage the bar as you go lower and lower with the latch, or the latch closes around the bar attached to the hood but there is a lot of play at the latch.
I can’t believe that the proper height of those bumpers is at the very end of the threads. So, something is off. And the hinges are only a couple years old.
If you remove the two hood levelers from the equation, either by lowering them a lot or just removing them - and the latch closes on the striker when the hood is closed - should there be ANY play of the striker after it is latched?
I just removed the 2 adjusters on my 70 and the latch has enough play to let the hood move from about 1/8” too low to 1/8” too high. The adjusters were adjusted to about max height to get the hood aligned with the fenders. And there is no play at all when hood is closed with adjusters in place.
At what I called max height, the last thread was just barely showing at the bottom of the U nut on both sides. My car is original and never wrecked with original adjusters that were still right where the factory had set them. I do see some dents where the adjusters contact hood underside - probably from all the hood slams over 50 yrs.
Thx Craig. That’s about where I figure it should be. But my adjusters are totally out of the bottom part of the u nut. So that’s not right. I did order a set of adjusters from WCCC.
I recall using the adjustment range of the latch itself to set the up / down position of the hood. When the hood is properly latched it should align to the fenders if you lift up on it to take up any slack in the latch.
Then adjust the height of the hood bumpers so that they pick up any slack in the latch so that when the hood is latched closed there is no downward slop.
Just clarify, the 1.5” is total length of threaded part of adjuster with it out of the U nut. Just making sure you have the correct adjusters for your car.
