Nice overview. I don’t recall a 5.0 powered cougar based on a Mustang chassis. I remember the Capri 5.0. from the '80s, but the only other one I remember is the front drive one from the late '90s.

They’re thinking of the Thunderbird-based Cougars of the upright rear window era - you could get the 90s 302 with low-profile intake like in the T-Birds. Two weekends ago, the 40-ish bartender at Jameson’s in Freeport ME was going on about how he missed his, so the image is fresh in my mind.

Loved the pictures of Gurney, Moore, and Jones!

Good article! Matt did his homework!

I think the early 80’s T-Birds/Cougars (the square ones right before the aero cars) were based on the Fox platform. I recall there was one year in there where you couldn’t even get a 5.0. Ford used some strange mystery CID v8.

The 80-82 Square Cougars and the 83-87 “Aero” Cougars were all Fox platform cars.

80-82 used a 255-ci V8 that was anemic at best.

Good article and great pictures - only saw a couple of missteps - Tiny Lund didn’t drive a Trans-Am Cougar, he drove a leftover TA Cougar turned NASCAR Grand American Cougar and he drove it to the championship.

They also didn’t correctly caption the XR7-G prototype and didn’t mention the success and championships that Jack Roush had with the Cougar - tho those were purpose built race cars and not based on production Cougars like the '67/68 TA and NASCAR Cougars.

Overall I think it was a pretty good article. I enjoyed seeing the picture of the paisley roof a trim Cougar. Steven

Keep that paisley in mind when you’re shopping for roof material for your vert project, Steven.

I like it but not that much.

Steven

The fox body ones. Almost identical to my 88 tbird. Brain fart on my end.
