Cougar maybe 100.
Any car, my 78 Trans Am, speedo was buried, only went to 100, needle was well past 100, guessing about 130.
That was a fun car.
Both on the freeway.
Was young didn’t know better.
Cougar… about 75 or 80. RPMs add up quick at highway speeds :-/
Had my '93 cobra to about 115 or 120 on the highway once or twice, caravaning with other folks driving long distance.
Like Zman said, was young then and had less to lose.
Cougar… not much over 75 MPH
Z28: 157 MPH in Death Valley.
Cougar, 130 mph but when it was still new back in '69. Felt real good!! Wouldn’t do it now though.
Faster then I should have…
Cougar: Had the speedo buried with pedal left on the backstretch of Charlotte Motor Speedway in the rain during a GoodGuys Event there. Had to lift for turn three. ![]()
I don’t own nor have driven anything faster.
My 75 cougar way back in the day, had the gas pedal mashed and the speedo pegged, wouldn’t do it now.
Legally a stock car at California speedway at the richard petty driving experience but I don’t think that counts so would be my suburban at martinsville speedway, 85 in the front stretch. So if your watching insurance companies I don’t speed anymore ![]()
Cougar: ~100 at the track
SHO: 125 going between Tulsa and Wichita…that is a BORING, FLAT drive…
Riding with dad in his squad car: SCARY FAST, cuz that thing shook like a Saturn V at liftoff! LOL
Fastest I’ve ever “controlled” anything is around .85 mach…
SHOW-OFF!!! ![]()
LMAO, if I’d have gotten the gig with the Air National Guard unit here, I’d be saying “Mach 2”…
So is this where the saying “fast as a mo (fo)” comes from?

Not sure, but that was funny as a mofo.
got a radar at 147 mph, with the 351c (… and words I never thought my buddy’s dad, the cop, would use)
it still had 1 or 2 inches of pedal to go, but was already floating from lane to lane.
did break quite a few speedo cables, though, so, a few times over 120mph.
something to ponder…
With a tire that is 26" tall, and a 2.8 rear axle ratio, 5000 RPM will get you 138.1 MPH with a 3.0 it will get you to 128.9 and a 3.50 will get you to 110.5 MPH. This assumes a 1 to 1 top gear and zero slip.

In a Cougar about 85 but can only guess ![]()
In a BMW M3 about 145 (track, controlled conditions of course!
)
In a Cougar 105 (lately ), In a 200 inch long AA fuel dragster in 1966, 175 in the Quarter
Back in high school (in the mid 70’s) I had a 1969 Cougar that had a highly modified 351-W. One night out on a LONG straight stretch of county road I buried the needle back around to 0. Speedo went to 120 and with the spacing of the marks I would guess it was in excess of 150! Needles to say the front end was light.
