Does anyone know how much paint it will take to paint the engine bay (firewall, aprons, frame, and core support) on a 1969? Planning on satin black single stage.
Thanks!
Less than 10 gallons.

I like using SEM Trim Black which I buy in a gallon. I would suspect to paint the engine bay is somewhere between a pint and a quart. There are other places to use trim black on the car. Buy one quart if you have a spray gun. Or 4 cans of aerosol.
Any idea in how the SEM product compares in finish to the Eastwood Chassis Satin black? I’ve used it a few times under the hood and has worked well.
A 1qt kit of 1k urethane will give plenty of mixed product (1-1/2 qts) for either a HVLP or HTE gun. I would expect enough for at least 2 or maybe 3 coats.
Urethane is no joke - dangerous stuff. Respirator and ventilation is not an option.
I used about half a quart sprayed of Endura urethane semi gloss. 3 coats sprayed color (1st coat light dusting basically) over 2 coats of black epoxy. Worked excellent and is super tough paint.
2K or 2 part paints that you mix in a catalyst are stronger than a 1K or paint from can. A friend was mentioning he likes to use a 2K called Hot Rod Black. Most of the urethanes are high gloss. You also wouldn’t want flat black. The Hot Rod Black is a low luster. Not sure what the brand is.
One thing about the SEM is you can touch it up later and it blends very well. I’ve use SEM sprayed from a gallon and then needed touch up later. I used their aerosol and couldn’t tell where I touched it up.
I bought a quart of PPG Low gloss black primer that needed a pint of hardener I also bought a gallon of thinner. If you plan to use a single stage paint I think you will use a quart of paint and maybe a quart of thinner. You will use some thinner.
I like the look/sheen. I believe that’s what I’ll use. Thanks!
I’m a big fan of SEMS Hotrod Black these days. The sheen in this picture is fairly accurate. Definitely less than a quart to the front of my 68.
Is that one or two coats? Nevermind that question. Pulled up the TDS sheet on the SEM website, and it states two medium wet coats.
Actually it is 3 coats over SPI Red Oxide primer for the authentic factory look.
Here is the link to Hotrod Black.

It took me a while of searching the SEM website to find it. It didn’t come up in their bar. 2K paints are stronger and more resilient than 1K. However, the 1K Trim Black touches up easily. Things that make me say Hmmmmm.
It seems that the trim black and the hot rod black look very similar, but I ordered the hot rod black kit because it is 2k.
I appreciate all suggestions & info.
