How to identify original exhaust on a '70 Cougar?

Ok Fellahs,

How do I know if the exhaust is original to the car, and how much of it may have been replaced in the past?
I’m looking at a '70, and the mufflers have the Ford script inside an oval on them. The pipes themselves are pretty rusty, with some small holes where they turn up behind the mufflers. Looks like original style muffler hangers and pipe hangers too (like what I’ve seen on WCCC site).

Just doing some homework / research, so any info or pics would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Here is a shot of my original 1969 428CJ exhaust system after a detailing.

On that 1970 system, you should be finding a pair of D0W… mufflers, and the tips should turn down (up :-)) like in my picture.

Please pardon the off-topic queery, but, what kind of “detailing” makes a 43 year old exhaust look like that??

Elbow grease and rattle can, didn’t turn out like I wanted though.

Here is what my original muffler looked like on my Boss 302 car.

Link works now.

Looks great to me, figured you were going to say “blasting” and some kind of high-zoot coating.

Thanks for the info fellahs, I appreciate it.

Scott, I’m not sure why you aren’t happy with the way your exhaust turned out… looks fantastic to me!

John, sorry I couldn’t see the pic. Says I need to sign up to view it.

Here are my pics, for feedback. Can see the turned down tip on the right in the one pic.

Judging from the location of the spring shackel, the exhaust looks short.
Here is what mine looks like from the side.

Thanks for the pic Scott. Much appreciated, everyone.

Mike,

I fixed the link. Sorry I had it as private not public. Here it is again.

Thanks John,

I noticed the exhaust on your Boss ends back by the shackles too. Is that normal?

Thanks for sharing your Boss 302 pictures John. Excellent rerstore job and attention to detail. You do some nice work!!

That is where I have seen them end on the few original I have look at. I think this is the same pipe used on a Mustang and comes up shorter on a Cougar (I said THINK).

The entire exhaust on the car was original. The tail pipes are a bit longer than a Mustang.
