How to match paint from a photo

I saw an example on teevee (on All Girl’s Garage, what a lovely show) of exactly the paint color I want to try and use for my new hood.

As I’m going to be brand new to painting (unless you count my rims, which I mostly don’t!) I have no idea how to go about trying to find and correctly apply a specific paint to get this look. The clear coat should be gloss, yes? But how do I find a paint that will match the look of that base coat?

Scott Barrett Jackson makes a new paint system for the home user. It’s a single stage paint system and comes with everything you would need. This might be a option for you. Here is the link for Barrett Jackson Paint System in Blue.

You could email the show, and ask what color/system it was…

Woah Steven that looks perfect! Since it’s just the hood I’m betting I get get away with just a quart rather than a whole gallon. So $80 at my local PepBoys. And no need to do separate base coat and clear coat, that sounds good to me, assuming it works well and all. Thanks very much!

And Todd, I dunno, sending emails to All Girls Garage seems like a good way to get punched in the nose by the missus!

Only if she finds out… :beerchug:

All Right… enlighten me…

Why a blue hood on a black car? :wtf:

Summit carries a lower end paint line now too aimed at the home user. I haven’t used it but I’ve heard good things about it.

Just to summarize what others have already said: Do not try to match paint from a photo.

Nobody here would spill the beans!

Much of the hood will be taken up by the cowl induction scoop, which will be black. The way I’m picturing it currently is for there to be black across the front face of the hood, the nose/raised part of the hood entirely black all the way from the bumper to the cowl, and then a line that basically connects the line created by the fender extensions, black below/in front of that and a blue like the photo above/behind that line. And as far as why have more than one color on the car, that’s like asking why have a black vinyl roof on a red car, or have a two-tone paint job, or have white bands wrapping across/around the tail area, or have chrome bumpers vs body-matched bumpers… just comes down to somebody’s idea of what looks cool.

If it doesn’t turn out looking good to me, I won’t hesitate to go ahead and make the whole hood black. I’ve just been comparing my particular black with that particular blue and I think they look really great together. If it doesn’t work out that way in the real world, so be it.

They have an animated graphic that shows an example of what the color is intended to look like on a 3-D shape that is moving with a simulated light source, it looks about right to me. They also have pics of three example cars that were painted with the paint, which also look about right. I would never try to truly match color from a photo, like, take a picture of part of my car and use it to choose a paint to try and match that for respraying a section of the body or something. I was just using the photo to show more or less the look I have in mind, and the Barrett Jackson paint seems to be right on.

So, the blue is more for a stripe/accent color then? Am I following that correctly? (just trying to visualize)

Visualize Whirled Peas.

More or less. I’m sure you’ve seen cars where the whole car is some color but then the hood is some form of black or gray, this is like the reverse of that. But not the entire hood will be blue, the front edge of it will be black, so if you were to look at the car from the front from very close to the ground, you’d never even know there was any other color, all you’d see is black. But then looking down on the hood from above, you’d see a cowl induction scoop that was black sitting on a hood that was blue, and also that raised beak section up the center of the hood will be black too. The scoop is gonna take up like half of the hood’s surface area, so that does make the blue a lot more like an accent/stripe color.

Scott I snapped this picture last week when you started your thread topic on the cowl/ram air. It’s a new Roush Mustang with a vented hood for heat release. It uses the same type of paint color scheme that you’re speaking about. Am I close on this?

Looks similar, but there the blue looks more like a stripe and less like its the base color for most of the hood. It’s hard to tell there, also, is that black area inside the blue a cowl induction hood? If so, then yeah, that’s pretty similar overall, though not exactly the same. Man, if I have similar sensibilities to Roush, that can’t be bad.

Too bad you couldn’t get somebody to do some photo shop work for you. It may help to get a better idea and maybe some others, before it is actually done.

That paint color looks to be GM Arrival Blue Metallic…A popular blue is Dodge Electric Blue Pearl.

Ok, I see now. If I’m picturing it correctly, you’ll have the blue end at the side edge of the hood, and go straight to black at the fenders? If it were me, think I might put black a couple inches into the side edges, so the blue would be almost like an “island” on each side of the center/scoop area…??? Just a thought!

No cowl induction. The blue stripe runs along the side of the hood scoop and then crosses in front of the forward facing scoop. The front of the scoop is to the right hand side of the picture while the louvered heat vents face the cab/windshield area of the car.
