How To Sharpen A Cougar's Claws

For those that haven’t seen it - This is the packet that was sent to dealers touting the Cougar Group II pieces/packages that Shelby American put together for Mercury. At the very end is an ad that Shelby placed in an issue of “Competition Press & Autoweek” trying to get rid of leftover inventory. Boy, when are they going to invent a time machine…

Thanks for sharing - that’s awesome!

Anyone see a Cat with a Weber setup?

I agree. I swear some of those catalog parts weren’t sold or even produced.

I really, really want a copy of this-

The COUGAR Weber carb photo looks like it is a mockup for the photo - I don’t think any of those have ever shown up in the wild.

The cool COUGAR valve cover isn’t something they could mock up easily - looks like a real valve cover to me. But I don’t think any of those have turned up in the wild yet either.

The fiberglass hood with hood scoop is also something that I have never seen even a photo of. If any were made, I’d love to know what the hood scoop looked like.

I believer everything else in the brochure has turned up.

Chris Noyer owns an XR7-G that has the Cougar script oil pan and the Cougar script valve covers. I don’t have any pictures of the car but last time I saw it it was painted black.

There is at least two of them in the wild. I owned one many years ago.

That is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen!

Thank you sooo much for posting that. The brochure photo looks like the photographer placed a plate on the manifold with the word “COUGAR” on it and in a different font than your original.

Sometimes Speed Shops would create wooden mock ups painted silver to photograph for printed marketing materials. Those advertising materials would often need to be printed before the actual production items were ready.

Can you tell us more about it? Where did you find it?

We are also having a discussion on differentiating original COUGAR oval air cleaners and reproductions. Do you have any original air cleaners?

Thanks again for contributing.

I appreciate the grammar Nazi in the spell check, on here, but that completely ruins my obvious excitement at seeing an actual Weber set up on a cougar lettered intake. I tried to say “OMG THAT IS NOW THE COOLEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!” and it wouldn’t let me post. HA!
Great to hear that there “were at least two”. What would that sell for today???

Years ago (2006) I found these hood pictures on a forum.

Note clearance for Webers!

Part number is S7WK 16612 A
No top view :frowning:

I assume, that since Shelby was selling it in the inventory sale, it existed at one point. Kevin Marti might have the sales records.

When I bought my oval air cleaner, small block valve covers, and aluminum intake (all Cougar), he also had a bellhousing with the Cougar lettering. Don’t know whether it was big block or small block. It was already sold, awaiting pickup. Blew my mind seeing that!

What would it take to reproduce these today? What legal, or copyright issues to overcome?

Thanks for adding those pics to this thread Vic. Yes, S7WK 16612 A is also the part # given in the brochure, with a suggested retail price of $149.50!

I will post some other pics I’ve culled from the internet through the years. Dan Case sent me this photo of a COUGAR Weber setup that sold on eBay some years ago.

Another “WOW!” - that too is a new one on me. Certainly looks vintage - a different version than what was pictured in the HTSACC brochure and what WCCC has sold in the past.

I think the face design/layout of what you posted 68MERC is even cooler than the one in the brochure.

Really appreciate you going to the trouble to share your photos with us!
