How to tear down remote mirror?

Hi there,

I’m new in this community. My name is Markku and I live here in northern Europe, Finland.
I’ve owned my 69 convertible now for three years and been restoring it since gradually system by system.
This is my first question to the community:

I have remote mirror (non sport mirror). How do you separate the mounting stand from the mirror assembly? I have been unscrewing the adjustment screw and it loosens but does not get out.
I would like to replace the pitted mounting stand with a good unit.

Thanks in advance!

Markku

Hello Markku and welcome, I am not much help with your type mirror, but I have torn apart and repaired many sport mirrors.
I feel sure Don or one of the members here will help.

Markhu, is your mirror the all chrome with remote control version? Is the head a rectanglar shape? If so as I recall the only thing holding the mirror head to the base is the single screw going through the back of the base and into the head. If you can turn the screw but it is not coming out try putting pressure on the head seperating it from the base as you turn the screw.

Thanks for your tips so far,

Yes, it is a all chrome, remote, rectangular shape mirror. I tried with pushing and pulling pressure while turning the screw but no luck. Now I noticed that when I try to tighten the screw, it just turns and turns. So now I can’t even get it tight either… Maybe the nut part is somehow broken. Unfortunately I can’t see how the nut side is constructed. Do I have to break the lens to get to it?

The screw from the base into the head goes into an odd looking bracket with a threaded hole for the screw. Maybe that bracket is spinning?

In any case the way to deal with problems with this fastener would be to push the mirror glass all the way to one side (expose behind the side that faces the driver as I recall) and remove the screw that hold the mirror/pivot to the head. Then, pull the mirror/pivot out some until you can see the bracket I am talking about and deal with whatever the problem is with it and the screw.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Bob

This is the screw i’m talking. It just keeps spinning…

I can’t find any other screw - even behind the lens plate no matter which angle I try to look between the housing and lens. Odd…

Keep in mind they were never meant to be pulled apart and serviced once the die-cast parts on the cables were crimped together. It can be done but takes a lot of practice, patience and a ready supply of junk mirrors on hand for parts. We should do a video…

Thank you Don,
Do you agree that there should be a screw behind the lens? I can’t see it even with an magnifying class…
Waiting for the video  I of course already took a look on your two videos on the subject nut did not find the answer.

There is only one screw and you show it in red.

Forget everything I said, I was speaking about a sport mirror (and you said yours was not!).

What about the one inside the stem?

I took some time and carefully drilled out the one and only screw visible. I found out why it was spinning - the square shape nut was smaller than the square hole located in the mirror base.
measurement revealed that the hole is aprx. 10mm when the square nut was aprx. 7mm. Bad design or too big tolerances…

The all chrome style remote mirror does not have a screw inside the stem, only the one that comes in from the back of the base into the head.

I took one I had here apart just to see how it was held together. While mine also has a smaller square nut than the hole that it fits into mine was tight enough to easily come apart. I can see now that trying to apply pressure to seperate the two sections would not help things. In fact it most likely would result in the nut retainer walls inside the base to spread farther apart which in turn would make it easier for the square nut to spin.
