I can use some ideas here running bad

Today, after filling up at a Conneco station, with premium. I filled up in Malta MT )and now i’m in Williston ND) With in a mile the car started having a hesitation when accelerating. When I stopped to check it out the idle was a bit erratic and very low. About 375. I checked the float fuel level(Hollie 600) and it was fine. I raised the idle up and adjusted the idle needles. Still runs like crap. with a slightly ruff idle. I was able to get a carb kit, fuel filter and carb cleaner. I’m thinking I’m doing a curb side carb rebuild in the morning. Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Did you run all of that fuel out of the car?

Maybe change the fuel filter, add some Lucas fuel system cleaner for the remainder of that tank if it’s still in there and drive a couple of miles. If it doesn’t get better then rebuild it. I would just want that suspect fuel completely out of there before I do the carb.

I would say I have run about 3/4 of that tank out. It is hard to say. The fuel sender I got is bogus. I fill it up, run about 165 miles and it shows 1/8 tank and the 22 gallon tank only takes about 8 to 9 gallons. Maybe I’ll pick up some of the Lucas fuel system cleaner, fill it up and head out in the morning after installing the new filter. If it does,t start running better I maybe in a better place tomorrow night to find parts on Monday.

I’m thinking change the fuel filter and get some good gas in there. With that being said double check your vacuum lines. It would be a heck of a coincidence to fill up and right after getting gas have issues that are unrelated, but weird things happen, and a vacuum leak can act like a carb issue.

I’d suspect a bad tank of gas - may be full of water. Run it practically dry and refill it before you go tearing into the carb, etc.

I would bet on bad gas. “HEET” water remover is sold at almost every parts store. This is a “mechanic in a can” that can actually work on helping to burn off water or impurities. Do the cheapest and or easiest thing first. Give that water remover a few miles to work and while doing so expect the engine to maybe run a little rough while “HEET” or a similar product is doing it’s job. Don’t panic.
Check your rubber line from the sender to the hard line.Out if sight and out of mind can cause anyone to overlook that line as with the line in the driver’s front wheel well .
Good advice on checking for a vacuum leak and clogged filter.Fill 'er up at a major brand gas station.

I think I’ll get some Heet or Lucas fuel system cleaner fill it up and head for Minot. I have about 220 miles on the tank of bad gas. Maybe I;ll be OK by Minot. Thanks for the ideas guy.

She’s running like she should. Turned out the front float bowl bolts had backed of slightly. Tight end them and it is running as before.

Excellent!!

All right! Way to go Neal! Remember you were looking for some adventure.

Yay! The funnest part of the road trip is trouble shooting and actually fixing the car while travelling (not according to the husband, but that’s my opinion). May the rest of your trip be uneventful :sunglasses:
