So I’m replacing the turn signal switch, on a project that has not been on the road in almost 30 years. I ordered a fixed column switch, and of course it doesn’t fit due to the guide pins on the upper knuckle.
So I’m scratching my head. But there were other clues. I had to lower the bracket that holds the Vacuum release valve, and tilt way actuator, so I could disconnect the molded switch connector. I had also noticed what turned out to be the column tilt cover plate.
Still it wasn’t making any sense as I didn’t know what I was looking at. My Marti report did not indicate a tilt wheel. 1968 Marti Report 8R93J512107.pdf (271.9 KB)
I discovered what all the other parts were by looking at WCCC website, trying to figure out why the fixed column switch it not fit correctly.
Maybe the factory, mistakenly gave me a Tilt Wheel?
Does Deluxe Marti Report normally indicate Tilt Wheel?
Well in any event I’m kinda excited about the discovery. Now I need to order the correct switch.
The Marti Report should indicate that the tilt wheel option was part of your ‘cats provenance’. It was a RPO ( regular production option ) priced somewhere in the 65 to 70 dollar range.
Unless you were the original owner of the car, is it possible someone had added the column and associated parts, hoses, relays and brackets ? That’s a BIG job, but not impossible - just a lot of time, expertise and patience !
Yeah, at one time it was a nice cat. It had been neglected for a long time, and it shows. Slowly I am bringing it back to life. Almost ready to road test it.
I have a friend who grew up in SoCal and bought his 68 GT around ‘91. He spent the next several years picking up cheap used and NOS parts at swap meets and installed most available options on the car, including tilt wheel and rear defroster. The parts were cheap back then and not too hard to find with plentiful swap meets and junkyards in the area.
