I put my 69 sleeper 428 cj project Cougar up for sale.

Here is the link to the auction. I just won’t have the time or money to build this car and I have the rustoration going on now and the GT-E lined up behind that one. Plenty of pics in the add.

And that my friends, is how one lists a car properly on ebay. Great pictures!

I know that Cougar. I think you bought it from Mike and Tim in Monroe WA. I had posted about it here,
See https://cccforum.discoursehosting.net/t/looked-at-a-barn-find-today-a-69-xr-7-q-code/2348/1

Yes that is the same car. And I did let them know where I heard about it. After I went through it last weekend I found out it had for less rust issues than I anticipated when I bought it in the blind. I hope to get a fair price for it, but I will be surprised if I get my money back out of it. And that’s the way it goes sometimes.

Thanks Don, I learned that from you.

I have the sister to this Cougar only difference is mine is a 4 speed. Same color combo and pretty much the same condition. My quarters are good, but, needs the p-side rear floor pan replaced. Looks like it sat outside some with the rear quarter window leaking and collected water there. I know where you are coming from as I have other projects ahead of mine as well. But, still holding on to the dream of restoring it. Good luck on the sale! I’ll be watching it :beerchug:

I remember you talking about this car when I bought the sister car. If mine was a 4 speed R code I would most likely keep it also. I’m assuming yours is an R code. I think this is a really cool car and I should keep it but it was an impulse buy (I’m a sucker for complete cars) and I want to put the money in my 69 R 4 speed project. I’ve also decided that I want an XR7-G, so I will be hoping to find the right one to come up for sale in the next couple of years.

There are a lot of watchers on this auction already so I am optimistic!

Ok with a few hours left I’m looking over the high bidders (boomersooner442) 100% positive feedback and see that 8 of the last 24 as a buyer say something like this (below). I don’t know if I can block him at this point and sure do not want to see him as the auction winner! Just a little disappointing to see this.

At the end of bid buyer never contacted me or paid for the item, STAY AWAY BAD

Positive feedback rating BEWARE THIS GUY DID NOT PAY FOR THIS CAR.HE"S DONE IT BEFORE DONT TRUST HIM!

Cancel his bids.

Ditto what Al said…cancel his bids.

I was away from the home and office all day and was unable to cancel his bids via my phone. So he or she “boomersooner442” was the high bidder at $9000. I will let his 24 hour period to make the deposit via paypal expire and then will decide what to do next. I will either relist with a buy it now of $8900 or dig into the engine and see what it would take to make it run / make sure there are no major issues inside the engine.

I’m disappointed with myself for letting that ebayer slip by me. I don’t sell a lot and am amazed at how poor of a reputation one can have with 100% positive feedback. Lesson learned.

Yeah, IMO eBay selling sux these days. The last 2 cars I’ve “sold” there were to deadbeats and nothing ever came of my auctions. Sellers can’t leave bidders bad feedback anymore, so the system is meaningless. I’ve only had luck with Cars-On-Line or Craig’s List ads these days.

That sucks :-/

Add in last second sniping, and it really isn’t a true auction. Each bid should add 1 minute to the auction end time ~ “Going once… going twice…”

That sucks. I guess we can hope that he surprises you but even if he pays it could be a problem after the sale. Can’t you offer the second high bidder a second chance? If you like the looks of that bidder and that bidder did bid $8900, that’s what I’d do.
Great Idea, Mike! Ebay should seriously look into that on “true” auctions.

His 24 hours to make deposit came and went with no contact. I will send out the second chance offer today. The number 3 bidder I know and bought a 69 XR7 from him previously.

Ebay needs a way to get rid of dead beat buyers like that guy. They have ways to get rid of bad sellers so why not bad bidders?
I would love to see that car restored some day.

I spoke with ebay today, they said if I would file a claim against him on August 2nd (earliest it can be done) that they would revoke his buying privileges. I made sure that his positive feedback was reviewed while I was on the phone with them. I relisted it on ebay with a buy it now of 10K or best offer, if it does not sell at the price that I would like to get for it I will just keep it.

Here is his latest positive feedback received today, not by me. A file should be made vs giving him bad positive feedback!!!

Screw this guy never paid and never contacted me at all such a bs and a waste Seller:

Because they believe the way to be successful is to keep buyers on the site. If you look at recent changes, such as all the annoying ads that cover everyone’s listings it will start to make sense. The revenue they raise from selling ads is based on number of hits. You generate a lot more hits from buyers than you do sellers. This will continue until they manage to drive the majority of sellers away and they realize if there’s nothing to look at people won’t click anymore.

I filed a claim and got my fees back. Second chance offer was not accepted, guy said he was out when he was outbid and bought something else.

Most people who contacted me about the car are very concerned about the condition of the engine, and I can’t blame them.

Currently I have removed the engine and am in the process of disassembly. As I thought the engine is standard bore with no lip and very little wear on the rod bearings. Part numbers on the head gaskets and paint marks on the block and crank etc.

I managed to get the passenger head off with the manifold attached. I had a lot more trouble with the drivers side and ended up pulling the engine which needed to be done anyway. The exhaust bolts were frozen and needed heat to break them loose.

There is no visible damage to the engine anywhere with the exception of some rust in the cylinders and various other places. The timing chain was replaced but I don’t think they ever got it to fire up. Looks like the crank turned about a half turn and everthing froze at that point. There was clean oil in the engine and dirty oil in the filter.

I found most of the plastic teeth from the original timing gear in the oil pan.

I found one freeze plug out and two others that are pushed outward in the middle due to ice! Not good but no visible damage. I am taking the engine to Keith Crafts shop when I get the last 5 pistons out. They are all stuck pretty good still. I’m not sure if I will have engine work done or just checked for damage. I am leaning toward having the block machined along with the crank and just have the heads checked out. The reason for this is that I still plan to sell the car. I may have the heads done also though since I could end up keeping the car in the end and at least it would be ready to build. This is all based on the block being good which I think it is.

Here are some random pics.

I just thought some of ya’ll would be interested in this stuff.
