Identifying Proper Nuts, Bolts, Clips, etc.

Good morning. I"m looking for help on how to identify the proper nuts, bolts, clips, and other fasteners.

I purchased an 1968 XR-7. The car was an abandoned restoration project. The more time I spend on the car, the more it becomes evident that the nuts and bolts have been moved/swapped around, and are not in their proper/factory places.

I purchased the assembly manuals, and I see that the drawings clearly identify the nuts and bolts by part number (example - 378178-S39, screw and washer assy.).

My question: Is there an index or similar document that matches the part numbers up to a drawing of what the part looks like? If not, how else can I identify part 378178-S39? As I am sure you know, many of the bolts have unique markings on their heads, and I want to put the car together as it should be.

Appreciate your time and help.

Paul

If that’s a 1/2" hex with conical washer and 1" of 5/16" - 18 thread with a soft silver Cd finish, I’d recommend AMK Products Guide to Ford Fasteners from WCCC #20582

Fantastic. This is what I’m needing. Thank you for the response.

You can also get a lot of info out of the AMK website itself, while you wait for your book to arrive

AMK’s reprinting of the information from the Utility and Hardware book will be helpful in determining the design and details of the nut, bolts and clips but will not provide you with the headmarkings of the specific plant and time period of the car your building. Those have to be determined by looking at unrestored, original examples from that same plant and period matching your car.

Just depends how far your going. Happy sorting

You can go to car shows or find a local cougar owner or buy a second car to help use as a template. AMK is a great source as well. You just might have to bite the bullets and buy new fasteners! Good luck
