Ignition switch replacement

Still working though my lack of key issues. What I need to know is how can I get the ignition switch out of the steering column? I have a replace ignition switch but I can’t get the original one out. Steering wheel is off and I’ve pushed on the so called little button that’s supposed to release it but nothing. What’s the best approach shy of I’ll the steering column out? Here’s where I’m at

If your area has a competent mobile lock smith, have them come out and make a key for it. I had to do this when my house was broken into many years ago. (don’t own any of those cars anymore) It wasn’t cheap, but also not really a bad deal. It only took him about an hour to do 2 cars for me.

The actual ignition switch is on the column, near the instrument cluster. It is actuated by a gear and linkage when you turn the lock with a key.

Ok so let’s call it a key lock, how can I get this out of the steering column so I can put a new one in that I have keys for? Is a lock smith the only way?
Thnx Steve

Switch needs to be in the ON position for lock cylinder to release from the column. I think you are gonna need to get a key made.

You have two choices - brute force or a locksmith.

If you remove one of your door locks, it should have a code on it, which a locksmith can make a key from. They can also make a key from the lock itself. Assuming the ignition lock cylinder has never been replaced, it will operate that as well.

Brute force method is to snap off the chrome finger wings and drill the tumbler until the lock pins fall out.

Well had a locksmith out today and about 30 min later had the new key lock in😃, that man was good! Thanks for the advice! Hopefully I can get the “RatCat” fired up soon!

The “Rat Cat” lives, and sounds pretty darn good!
Also, can someone identify these? They were part of the parts stash in trunk. I can see a price somebody wrote on them with a sharpie $150 so they must be somewhat in demand I would think

Those are front bumper guards. Available as a stand alone option on a 1969 and part of the exterior protection group option for a 1970.

They look a bit pitted, but definitely good enough for a ‘fun car’ that isn’t intended for shows. 70b302cat gave you the link if you want to swap for a restored pair, but if you don’t plan to use them as is or get a re-chromed pair, I’d definitely be interested.

Once again you guys are the best! Think I’ll try to mount them on the “Rat Cat”
