Importing a car from Canada

Hi there!
Does anyone know how to go about bringing a car with a Canadian title to the U.S. I can get the guy to drive it from Toronto into NY, but after I get the title, is there any problem with DMV? If he drives it in, is there a customs problem? Thanking you all in advance. David

It’s been over 10 years since I did this but it was a very simple process-much simpler than importing a car into Canada. I simply showed up at US Customs with the car on my trailer and took the sale documents with me. They checked over the paperwork and waved me through. It took less than 30 minutes. Once in the U.S., all I had to do was go to the local DMV where I paid tax on the purchase price and the cost of title transfer and licensing fees. Overall, a very simple process.

Very cool. Thank you for the help. If anyone else can share their experiences, it would be appreciated.

A guy I was in the Navy with bought a Skyline in Japan and had it shipped over. This was post 9/11, so it had to go through a customs process. Far as he explained, it was basically just a security scan like any car coming in? When he was talking about it, it sounded pretty simple. Proper paperwork, no hassles or hold ups. Here in NM the DMV does a vin check on all out of state vehicles, but that’s a pretty simple process too… You’re state may do the same.

I don’t think you’ll have any issues…

We imported a 1984 BMW last year. It was exempt from both EPA and DOT requirements but you still need to have the documents from each agency along with the Canadian Title and Bill of Sale. When you come through the border you tell them you are importing a vehicle. Then you go inside with your paperwork. Cost us $35 for the administration fee.

You need form 3250-1 from the EPA and form HS7 short from the DOT.

Hope this helps.

Thank you so much!

You need to report to US Customs (and maybe to Canada Customs) with the vehicle and all the paperwork. You can not have the present owner drive it across and meet you on the US side as you will both be in more trouble than is worthwhile (car could be seized, a bunch of fines, etc.).
My recommendation is to research what is involved to bring it across yourself, the alternative (and it may be less hassle in the long run) would be to hire a broker to do it for you.
I recently helped a fellow export and import a 67 Cougar from Washington state into Canada. I have done this myself several times with no problem, however the rules and requirements have changed since October 2014, and we ended up requireing a broker to get the paperwork done.
Good luck to you.

I was not aware of the changes in October so my instructions may be invalid. Do your research!

The new regulations I spoke of were to bring a car from the US to Canada, but they may also be in effect from Canada to the US as well. The new forms, paperwork, and electronic filing were all new US requirements and started on October 1st of this year.

Thank you for all your help. I’m thinking broker at this point. I haven’t got the time or the patience. But who knows…maybe it will work out. Thanks again.

Im in Canada and sold a car to the USA. He sent a trucking company to pick the car up. I sent the bill of sale and the OWNERSHIP! not title as it is called in the USA. This guy who got the car had quite a time and happened to get the wrong person who didn’t know what they were doing. They kept saying I didn’t sent the title not realizing that what I sent “ownership” was the same thing. I ended up having to send a notarized bill if sale and still was not good enough. Finally he ended up having to go the the State office to clear it up and all was fine from that point. This was not a cougar, but a 1989 Saab SPG.
