INFO NEEDED: DIfference between Pre and post 1/3/67 Under dash XR7 harnesses?

Greetings!

Trying to figure out the difference between these two versions of harness so that I can properly advertise them for sale. Found them in a box…..fairly unmolested along with a really molested one…..but salvageable!

I have one with a Red Tag and C7WB-14401-L and two without tags that appear different…..one has a blue piece of tape in the middle of where the cluster would sit-ish. Other one, not sure….

However the only difference that I can find is: on the RED TAG -L harness, it is lacking one lite blue/red stripe female red round plug wire that appears on the two other harnesses, about 3-4” from the fuse block. Short wire with a round Red female connector. I also couldn’t determine what it is for……cluster lamp of some sort??? Dash panel???

(I have no XR7 wiring diagrams of harnesses at this time but have Electrical Assembly Manual on order.) Managed to figure most of this out except for the one wire above and two connectors below…..

The other issue is being unable to identify two connectors on the LH side of the wiring harness along with all the connectors that go to the front of the engine comp.

Both are three wire connectors, BLACK connector has Male Black with Orange or Red stripe, Male Orange with Green stripe and Female Green with White stripe wires, and a BLUE connector has Male with Lite Blue/?, Female with Black, and Female with Orange with Black stripe wires.

I’m guessing that these two connectors belong to something heading to the rear of the car, however I have no harnesses left to run down the left rocker panel!

Thanks for looking!!! Hope I can find some sanity here cuz I’m going crazy chasing wires…..

Cheers!
Steve

WHERE DO THESE GO? (LH side of harness at door jamb.

Blue/Red (teeny tiny stripe) wire…..unique to this type of harness….. FOR WHAT???

It will have a round red female connector on it. This one has been removed for some stupid reason……take away his wire cutter…….

Blue stripe on middle of harness aprox in middle of instrument cluster. Positioning aid for assembly or identifier? No tags remain. :frowning:

The short blue/red wire near the fuse box is for the PRNDL lamp.
I have the black plug as for brake signal, flasher signal, backups.

I have the blue plug as running lights in the center.

Hope this helps.

Midlife,

YES this is a good start! I was thinking that the blue/red was part of the console wiring connectors….which lines up with PRNDL thing!

I still haven’t located the rest as they don’t seem to appear in books, shop manuals, or in TSB’s or at least the page that I have found. The XR7’s seem to have slipped thru all the cracks in Dearborn for a couple of years!

What I am not seeing is the harness number associated with those two connectors.

I was also told that the later harnesses do not have a RED feed wire to a Stop Light Relay…..of which I can also find no reference to that part…as I may be looking at late doc’s….where the part is already gone(?)..and should show in early docs……plenty of other relays in 67 but not that one!

Need to check drawing in Electrical Vacuum book (big pages) for that piece. Definitely early drawings in that pub.

Thanks!!! This is a good start.

Steve

The blue stripe in your last photo could possibly just be some old glue residue from the tag that had the part number on it. I have seen some that look quite a lot like that. Did you look on the WCCC website as they do tell about and show some of the differences in wiring harnesses.

Randy,

You may be right about the blue…..

I checked out WCCC’s bits and under the “standard” under dash harness “early” they posted two pictures, this one of the K5 relay I believe. All of my harnesses which are LATE according to other picture below match the “early” style in this pic. I believe that WCCC has labeled these bassackwards! Will bounce it off of Vic and onwards to WCCC to correct. Big oops that we don’t need to propagate to the masses!

WRONGO!! THIS IS INCORRECT-BACKWARDS!

This is the other difference mentioned on WCCC in the “STD Under Dash Early” harness example on sale, on the very LH connectors which I am presuming head rearwards…. No red wire & Blue connector has three wires instead of two.

WHAT I HAVE, is three late harnesses according to this. No K11 Stop Lamp Relay provisions that I can find. Only difference is the one small Blue/Red wire near the fuse block….so that is a “kinda Late” 67 harness!!! Medium Late? I know that my 14401-L harness is a late, with the RED TAG style that seems to appear in 68+ harnesses…..

One more odd thing…..that I cannot find. On one of the “mid Late” ignition switches ,there is a small relay attached to the center post with a very “just for this” sorta look to it…and a medium sized VIOLET wire attached to it. Unfortunately the wire was cut off about 6” out and I can find nothing in my box of scraps that came with the harness that matches?

What sort of optional equipment would the Cougar need this breaker for? TV option???

Anyone seen this? Will try and post picture later.

Cheers!
Steve

Violet wire at the ignition switch connects to spade on side of ignition for proof-out of brake proportioning valve.

midlife,

You are correct about the side terminal violets…
However this is different wire! CB is connected to ignition switch HOT center post and other side is then connected to a fairly large VIOLET wire that is part of the stand-alone AC main wiring harness. Separate from the under dash harness.

This is an old pic from a similar post about same…and similar mixup!

You can just see violet wire at top of picture connected to CB post. Quite the Circuit Breaker holder!!!

Steve

Seat belt reminder power? I’ve not seen anything like that picture.

midlife,

I too had not been able to recall this Circuit Breaker on the rear post, but I never took apart many 67’s and if I did, it was DECADES ago! Yikes!

Seatbelt reminder connection is much much smaller violet and a green wire(s).
Cheers!

Fastmerc you will find the assembly manual holds a wealth of information on both standard and XR7 wiring! The c/b on the ignition switch is for A/C, the two plugs go to harness #13A449 going to the rear of the car. The two plug pigtails noted by WCCC are not backyards and are correct by the wiring diagrams. I have no harness’s here at home but will be at WCCC in the morning and will verify actual harness’s. I am a little confused by your understanding of early and late, and it could be that I am missunderstanding what your trying to say, there are no early XR-7 harness’s. only early and late standard with the main difference being the stop lamp relay. But even the assembly manual does not show all the different harness’s and if you are frustrated now wait till you try following some of the diagrams, I took mine down to the local Fed X and blew them up to 11x24. I found a 1967 Ford service bulletin no 28 that shows the early diagram with the stop lamp relay wiring harness, it’s two pages and also show without stop lamp relay (late) same bulletin no 45 shows the XR-7 wire diagram. In the standard diagram the PRNDL light is fed from a junction in the harness but I’d red /blue with the red female connector. I have seen the red/blue directly from the fuse box but I can’t remember what year they started that.
