Is this a light diffuser

I recently upgraded all my interior lights to lEDS. When I removed the center console to do the shift select light for my automatic transmission, I found this piece of plastic, broken in 3 pieces, lying on the carpet under the console:

I’m not sure what it is but I am speculating it is a light diffusor for the shift select to let the light through the white but block it on the black part.

Can anyone confirm? And if so, what is the name of the part and can I buy a replacement somewhere?

Thanks.

It would be helpful to know what year your Cougar is. I will take a guess a say 67-68. It would also be helpful to have some dimensions of the broken part. If your car is a 69-73 it is not the diffusor for the shifter light.

Sorry for omitting those details.

My car is a 1967 XR-7.

The piece is approx. 1/2" wide and 1 3/4" end to end.

I would say that is is a diffuser for the high beam indicator. Sets flat on the back side.
