It's a start again

Sal, this looks great. Put a nice sounding exhaust on her and some nice wheels. There is one of those around my town and you can always hear the thing coming but it seems to fit the car. If I had someone say, come and get it, its yours, I want you to have it. I would thing, IT’S FREE!!!

Nice car Sal. Good to see the progress on the convertible. Yeah, I finally registered on this site. Like you I been busy. Making SLOW progress on my 1970 Cougar. Doing a front suspension and brake rebuild right now. i hope to see you and the cars soon!

Sal, nice car. The convertible looks really great. Yeah, I finally joined this site. I been pretty busy like you. Making slow progress on my “70”. I have the front suspension and brakes completely off and working on replacing everything currently. I hope to see you soon.

Scott

Scott, hope to see you soon, I’ve been busy with work and honeydoo’s around the house. I met a young fellow that is willing to align my hood and drivers door. He’s the son of a guy I met hanging around on a cruise night recently. Jock came to my house and spent about 3 hours on the hood and finally got the hood to come down in the back. The door was a different story, it would not close all the way and would spring when opened. It was adjusted out as far as we could get it and the bottom of the door was out farther than the top. After a little manipulation by Jock, we learned that the door was not joined together on the inside in the front and on the back. I sent up the last Saturday of the month to drive the car to him and remedy the situation. It seems that the welds that hold the door together separated. Will try to spot weld them but may have to drill holes and use metal screws. I will keep posted on progress. SalD

Sal good luck with the door alignment. I am scrambling this morning to get my car suspension and brakes back together. Woke up this morning to find out we are in the Bullseye for what will be Hurricane Isaac. The path they are now showing is not good for us!

I’ve been driving her on a regular schedule and have worked most of the problems out of the rebuild. The door was welded into shape nicely and closes well. The quarter was fitted to the door before we realized it was not in form so it meets the quarter a little low, but it is what it is. I followed ECI Bobs F-16 pin stripe tape recommendation and used a fine hair brush to paint the black stripe on. I took her to my first cruise-in and received much attention along with stories and shared memories about Cougars that once existed. I am entered in a car show on October 6 and plan to take her to “cruising the coast” the week after. Here are some pics.

Will get better pics when I have her in the cruise-in SalD

Sal, they look great! you changed the wheels on the hard top?
The door locks on the Vert, I used to have those 30 years ago, brings back memory’s

Nice Sal! :beerchug:

Hey, lemme bring up a blast from the past. How’d you do against the Pinto in the show? :bloated: :buck:

Just got tired of the rims on the hard top but they will reappear in the future. Those 18 inch wheels and the low profile tires ride hard for an old man.

ECI Bob, the Pinto moved to the last isle in the back, I’m in the FRONT ROW!

It’s been a lot of fun putting my vert on the road, I still have some to do, the drivers window needs to be readjusted along with the rear windows and convertible top. The window seals on both ends of the glass but not in the middle. Monday, I will bring it to an AC expert to evaluate my cooling problems. Looks like I’ll need an electric fan and I may have a blockage. The front end needs to be rebuilt, I kept putting it off and should have dome it when the front end was off but will tackle it after I put a few miles on her.

SalD

The vert didn’t make it to Cruzin the Coast but Scott and I tandem with his 70 factory sun roof and my green standard. It was alot of fun. The wife drove the standard to the second car show for the vert last Saturday so we had both cars side by side. I was called out to work and didn’t return till 2pm so no pictures. Out of 100 cars and the judges top 50, the SalD family came out with ZERO! I was shocked!

Now for the bad news: Sunday I had a friend on the phone to diagnose the problems with my Classic Auto Air with no resolve so I decided to check the intake manifold again to see if it was still sucking air and the air sucking had gotten worse, diverted my attention to changing the oil because the break in oil has been in for 6 months or so and found a drip coming from the rubber pan gasket or timing gasket. It was time to back away from the car!

Monday I made my list and called a company that Classic Auto Air recommended to fix my AC, put the car on the trailer. The trailer had a flat, I aired the tire and took car and trailer to replace the stem. On the way back tragedy struck.

One of the back straps was in a bind on the trailer and broke sending the car into the electric jack. I first was afraid to look, I could of had the front of the car in the back of my van but the electric took the impact and only the front valance needs to be replaced. I spent the rest of the day separating the front of the car from the tongue of the trailer. I was only 2 blocks from my home so all the neighbors had a hand.

Tuesday I trailered the car about 60 miles to Roads Hogs in Houma LA sporting shiny new straps, The company is well organized and remarkably clean. They specialize in restoring old cars and I was impressed. I left the car with my list and promised to return with my wallet.

At least this morning, I don’t miss the vert being in the garage. SalD

Nooo!!! That really sucks, sorry that happened. At least the damage looks like it was just limited to the valence. Hopefully it didn’t mess up your headlight vacuum actuator or anything else in there.

Sorry to hear about that SaID, It is good though, that is all that happened. It shouldn’t take too much to fix.

Wow Sal, sorry about the strike of bad luck. But it seems like it turned out about as well as it possibly could, considering. Here’s to a speedy recovery for your cat!

UPDATE:

Still no vert in the garage but drove to see progress and after a grade A front valance from West Coast and a few new supports for the grill, the car looks as good as new.

After some research into the seat risers that we installed, I found that the seats were not at the best angle and realized that I/we installed them backwards and were probably Mustang risers in the first place. Road hogs removed the problem risers and replaced them with the appropriate convertible seat risers. The interior is back to a normal stance and problem solved.

The intake vacuum leak was replaced with a new edelbrock 2v 4 barrel intake but the car still runs like it has a vacuum problem.

Finally, the AC was being worked on and when I/we installed AC I/we did not provide a suitable power source to the unit so said unit would not run sufficiently and shut off. In the diagnosis process, the I portion of I/we apparently crossed wires to the vent switch causing it to run continuously and strip the gear. Solution: Remove unit from the car, install a new switch and replace unit.

Note to self: Do Not Wrench on Car! SalD

Oh Sal, so sorry for your headaches man! If you wrench something wrong, then that is just an excuse to go back into the garage to wrench until you make it right. Right?

Mike, in this case, someone else will have to make it right. In most cases, I have surrounded myself with people willing to share their knowledge and can eventually diagnose and fix problems. At best I am a parts changer and am usually struggling to diagnose my cars ailments so if I have a leak in the power steering hose, I can change the bad hose but if the leak is coming from someplace that is not so obvious, I am not the guy to track it down. I usually give it my best shot and sometimes I pay extra to enjoy that learning curve. You got to love this hobby. SalD

Sal everyone of us started out as a parts changer. You and your Cougars will get there. Hold your head high at least your are willing to try to fix and work on your car. I hope the valance turned out well with the grade A replacement.
Steven

^^^ Exactly! Heck, at this point I’m just a part’s changer too! …and a cleaner. Lots of cleaning at this stage. The nice thing though is changing parts and cleaning stuff boosts your confidence and lets you see instant progress / bang for your buck.

“Woo! It’s shiny again! I did that! I rock!” :beerchug:
