I’ve searched the net, I’ve looked in the shop manual, and I am not able to find a good definitive answer to this question.
What are all the locations on a classic Cougar where it is safe to put a jack? What about jack stands?
What are the ideal spots to use to jack the car up and insert the jack stands, and where should the jack stands go?
If you’re referring to jack stand locations for hours or days of working on the car, versus months of the car sitting (like wintertime), does that change the ideal locations to put jack stands?
I always jack up the front end under the tork box and place the stands right under the front frame rail just behind the tork box.
The rear I jack under the pumpkin and place the stands under the rear axel.

X3 on this and I dont have a lift either… I also have ramps but I wont leave the front end up on em for long because our gas tank filler neck is on the rear end of the car. Not advisable to do on a full tank with the gas cap with a 40+ yr old gasket.
I’m going to be jacking Diane up for the winter very very soon, although I’ll end up taking her down when the wife and I buy a house in the next few weeks. Move her to a proper garage!!
I am about to put a fuel filter in though, and am following Bill’s advice of putting it between the fender and the pump, and I know from experience that gas wants to pour out of this particular junction. I figured if I jack up just the front (and probably just the driver’s side), that will raise it enough that gravity won’t pull the gas out when I install the filter. I’m now hoping my tank is low enough that it’s not gonna want to pour out the back! Thanks for pointing that out!
