Hey all. First post, we will see how it goes. I recently was fortunate to purchase an original , unmolested 67 standard. I was told by the original owners son from whom I bought the car, that the car had always been stored indoors. There is body work to be done but the car appears very solid with 88k miles. I have spent many hours reading on this forum and I am excited to get started on the car. My first concern is the brakes. I have removed the front discs and would like to rebuild them. I have found the pistons, seals, boots and other parts. I used an adapter I made to push out the frozen pistons with a grease gun and found the calipers to be slightly pitted at the seals and dust boot areas. I then had the calipers sand blasted which seemed to clean up those areas and the fresh metal has started to rust quickly . If I treat the areas around the seals with a rust converter, is it reasonable to expect I can reuse the calipers? Or will I likely run into leaks quickly?
Welcome aboard! (I don’t have factory brakes on mine, so someone will be along to answer for you!)
I would not rust convert the areas you speak of, I would put the calipers together in a timely enough fashion that said rust would not occur. Then I would mask off the boots and pistons and spray the caliper housings with cast iron (natural) paint.
Regards,
Bob
Ok, thanks. No primer?
I find that with the cast iron paint I use, primer is not really necessary.
